VW Crafter: Complete Power Window System Failure Fixed

Having experienced a similar issue with my 2015 VW Transporter diesel, I can share what worked for me. All power windows stopped functioning at once, which pointed to an electrical rather than mechanical window motor issue. The main culprit turned out to be a weak battery. When the battery voltage drops below a certain threshold, the window controls system shuts down as a protective measure. The window initialization error you mentioned matches exactly what I encountered. My repair process: Workshop performed a full electrical system diagnostic, Battery tested at critically low voltage, Old battery replaced with new one (290€ including labor), Window system required reinitialization after battery replacement, All window controls worked perfectly after reset Before going to the workshop, could you share: Battery age and last replacement date, Whether other electrical systems show issues, If the window problems started gradually or suddenly, Current battery voltage reading if you have access to a multimeter This sounds very similar to my situation, but knowing these details would help confirm if you are dealing with the same root cause. Window motor or window switch issues typically affect individual windows rather than all at once.

Thanks for the detailed explanation of the battery-related issues. My Crafter had its last service at 174545KM and they did a battery check but found no issues. The window problems started quite suddenly last week during heavy rain. I just checked the battery voltage with a multimeter and got 12.1V with the engine off, which seems a bit low. The starter seems slightly sluggish too, now that you mention electrical systems. The window controls feel completely dead, with no response or sounds when pressing any window switches. A window reset procedure would be ideal before spending on repairs, but I cant get any response from the window controls to even attempt it. Will try charging the battery first to see if that helps restore power to the window regulator system.

I can confirm that 12.1V is definitely on the low side, especially since my Transporter had similar readings before complete window system failure. The sluggish starter you mentioned matches my experience exactly, it was one of the first signs before the window controls stopped responding. In heavy rain conditions like you described, the electrical system works harder (wipers, lights, etc.) which can push a borderline battery over the edge. The window regulator system is particularly sensitive to voltage fluctuations. Before my battery replacement, I tried: 1. Using a battery charger overnight 2. Cleaning battery terminals 3. Multiple attempts at window initialization The battery charging temporarily restored window functionality, but problems returned within days. The window controls would work intermittently until they completely failed again. The definitive fix was battery replacement plus proper window regulator initialization. My window troubleshooting experience suggests trying a full battery charge first, its much cheaper than immediate replacement. Just ensure the new battery matches original specifications if replacement becomes necessary. Would recommend checking alternator output voltage (should be 13.8-14.4V) while running to rule out charging system issues before focusing solely on the battery.

The battery voltage information is really helpful, I will definitely start with a full charge to see if that resolves the window controls issue. The timing with the heavy rain makes more sense now, as the extra electrical load probably pushed the weak battery past its limit. I checked the alternator voltage as suggested and got 13.9V with engine running, so the charging system seems to be working properly. Will connect the battery to a charger overnight and try testing the window regulator system again tomorrow morning. If charging alone doesnt restore the window controls functionality, I suspect youre right about needing both a new battery and proper window initialization. The symptoms match exactly what you experienced, especially the gradual decline in starter performance followed by complete window system shutdown. Really appreciate the detailed troubleshooting steps and sharing your repair experience. Will update once I test the windows after a full battery charge. The window motor systems in these vans clearly dont handle low voltage situations well, but at least its a relatively straightforward fix if the battery is the root cause.
