VW Eos TDI Strange Temperature Control Problems Fixed

Having issues with my 2007 VW Eos 2.0 TDI showing contradicting temperature symptoms. The engine overheating light comes on occasionally, but paradoxically, it takes unusually long to reach normal operating temperature. I suspect a faulty thermostat or cooling circuit, but want to confirm before heading to a workshop. Has anyone experienced similar temperature control issues with their TDI? Looking for tips on diagnosis and repair solutions that worked for you, especially regarding the cooling system components and potential costs involved. Any firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Having moderate experience with VW diesel engines, I faced a very similar issue with my 2009 VW Passat 2.0 TDI. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I encountered, inconsistent temperature readings and engine overheating warnings, combined with slow warm-up times. After some diagnostic work, my workshop identified a faulty map thermostat in the cooling system. These electronic thermostats can sometimes send incorrect signals, causing the temperature control system to behave erratically. The repair, including parts and labor, cost me 350€. The thermostat housing replacement solved all the issues, and the engine has been maintaining proper operating temperature since then. No more warning lights or extended warm-up periods. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you share: Current mileage on your Eos, Any recent cooling system maintenance, Whether the temperature gauge shows consistent readings, If you notice any coolant loss This information would help determine if your symptoms truly match my experience with the thermostat failure or if there might be other cooling system components involved.

Thanks for the input. My Eos has 38001km and had its last service 3 months ago. The temperature gauge fluctuates inconsistently, making it hard to get an accurate reading. I am not seeing any obvious coolant loss, but the symptoms you describe with your thermostat housing issue sound identical to mine. The slow warm up combined with unusual engine overheating warnings matches exactly. Since the water pump and cooling system were checked during the recent service, I will have the thermostat checked first. The 350€ repair cost seems reasonable if it resolves these temperature control problems. Glad to hear replacing the thermostat fixed it completely in your case.

Thanks for the follow-up details. With those symptoms and your recent service history, I am even more convinced that your Eos is experiencing the same thermostat malfunction I had with my Passat. The pattern of inconsistent temperature readings without coolant loss strongly points to the thermostat housing. After my repair, I learned these electronic map thermostats commonly fail in the TDI engines around 35000-45000km. Your mileage falls right in that range. Since your recent service cleared other cooling system components like the water pump, focusing on the thermostat is a logical first step. The temperature sensor readings become unreliable when the thermostat starts failing, causing those frustrating engine overheating warnings despite the slow warm-up times. The fact that no coolant leak is present further supports this diagnosis. One tip based on my experience: request that they check the temperature sensor connections while replacing the thermostat, as these can sometimes get damaged during the repair. The total repair time was about 3 hours in my case.

Thanks for all this detailed information about the thermostat housing issue. Your experience with the Passat has been really helpful, especially knowing it fixed the same temperature control problems I am seeing. I will book the car in next week and specifically ask them to inspect the thermostat and sensor connections, mentioning the common failure pattern around my current mileage. The explanation about the electronic map thermostats causing inconsistent readings makes perfect sense given my symptoms. Good to know there was no engine overheating damage in your case despite the warnings. I feel much more confident now about the likely cause and repair costs involved. Hopefully replacing the thermostat will resolve my cooling system issues just as effectively as it did with your Passat.
