VW Fox Diesel Misfire: Common Intake Manifold Issues

Having trouble with my 2008 VW Fox diesel that recently started acting up. The engine misfires and jerks during acceleration, runs really rough at idle, and sometimes stalls completely. The check engine light is on, power output is notably reduced, and there's a strong exhaust odor. Looking at the symptoms, I suspect a faulty intake manifold might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar manifold pressure issues on these engines? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences, especially regarding diagnostic steps and what the final fix was at your workshop. Also curious about typical repair costs and time needed for this kind of job.

Having moderate experience working on VW engines, I faced almost identical issues with my 2006 VW Polo diesel. The symptoms you describe match exactly what I experienced, engine misfire, rough idle, and reduced engine performance. The intake manifold gasket leak due to scorching was indeed the root cause. My mechanic found this after running pressure tests on the manifold sensor system. The repair involved completely replacing the intake manifold assembly and associated gaskets to restore proper engine performance. The total repair cost was 1180€, which included parts and labor. The workshop needed about 6 hours to complete the job. Since the fix, the engine has been running smoothly with no more misfires or power issues. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you provide: Current mileage on your Fox, Any recent engine work or modifications, Specific error codes from the check engine light, Whether you notice the problems more during cold starts, If you hear any whistling sounds from the engine bay This information would help confirm if your manifold sensor system is experiencing similar issues and whether the gasket leak symptoms match what I encountered.

Last service was at 147000km and currently showing 148871km. The manifold pressure symptoms match your description perfectly. Scanning showed error code P0299 and P0101. No recent engine work except regular oil changes. The whistling noise is definitely present, especially noticeable during cold starts and when accelerating. The engine misfire seems most pronounced before the engine warms up. No modifications have been made to the original setup. Based on your experience, would replacing just the manifold gasket be sufficient, or should I consider a complete manifold sensor assembly replacement to prevent future issues?

Looking at your error codes and symptoms, especially the P0299 and P0101, your situation is nearly identical to what I faced. I initially considered just replacing the gasket on my Polo, but the complete manifold assembly replacement proved to be the smarter long-term solution. The whistling noise and cold start engine misfire you describe are telltale signs of a vacuum leak in the manifold system. My mechanic explained that when these manifolds fail, the internal components often develop micro-cracks that worsen over time, leading to inconsistent air-fuel ratios and poor engine performance. From my experience, going for the complete assembly replacement addressed not just the immediate vacuum leak but also prevented potential sensor failures that often follow. After 30000km post-repair, my engine performance remains solid with no check engine lights or manifold pressure issues. A partial fix might save money initially, but based on how the symptoms progress, you will likely end up replacing the entire unit eventually. The manifold sensor system is critical for proper engine operation, and any compromise in its integrity will continue affecting overall performance. The repair cost might seem steep, but considering the improved engine performance and elimination of potential future issues, it was worth the investment in my case.

Thanks for the detailed information about your Polo repair experience. Your feedback definitely helps confirm my suspicions about the intake manifold issues on my Fox. Those error codes plus the whistling sound and cold start problems seem to point clearly toward manifold pressure problems. Given this affects engine performance so significantly and could potentially cause more damage, I think I will follow your advice and go for the complete manifold assembly replacement rather than just trying to fix the gasket leak. While more expensive upfront, it makes sense to address all potential failure points at once. The quoted repair time and cost gives me a good benchmark to work with when discussing this with my workshop. Will schedule the repair soon before the engine misfire issues get any worse. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, definitely helped clarify the best path forward for fixing these manifold pressure symptoms.
