VW Fox Tailgate Sensor Fault Causing Opening Issues

Looking for advice on my 2007 VW Fox diesel with a power tailgate issue. The tailgate only opens halfway and then stops. Already checked the error memory which shows a fault. Pretty sure its related to the hall sensor since the tailgate behavior is inconsistent. Has anyone dealt with a similar problem? Specifically interested in the repair process and if replacing the sensor wiring fixed it. Any tips on troubleshooting or experience with workshop repairs would be really helpful.

Similar issue occurred on my 2009 VW Polo diesel. The automatic tailgate started acting up, opening partially before stopping. The electrical sensor was sending incorrect signals, causing inconsistent operation. After some basic troubleshooting, took it to a workshop where they diagnosed a faulty cable connection to the tailgate motor. The sensor itself was fine, but the wiring had worn out over time. Total repair cost was 95€, which included replacing the damaged wiring and testing the system. The repair process was straightforward: Complete diagnostic scan, Removal of tailgate trim, Cable replacement, System reset, Function test Since the fix, the tailgate has worked perfectly. These sensor fault issues are fairly common in VW models from that era. What trim level is your Fox? Also, has the tailgate ever been repaired before? This info would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced. A workshop visit is recommended since accessing the tailgate motor and electrical components requires specific tools and expertise.

Thanks for your detailed response. After checking my service history, this is actually the first major issue with the tailgate since the latest service at 75000km. Mine is the base trim model, and the tailgate has never been repaired before. The sensor calibration and wiring seem to match the symptoms you described. Good to know the repair costs were reasonable at 95€. I will probably take it to a workshop since the open tailgate issues are getting worse and I dont want to risk damaging the motor by continuing to use it. Will the system reset be enough to fix the hall sensor readings after the wiring is replaced, or does it need additional calibration?

Based on my experience with the same issue on my Polo, the system reset alone was enough to restore proper hall sensor readings after the wiring replacement. The vehicle sensor calibration happens automatically during the reset procedure. When the workshop replaced my wiring, they performed a full diagnostic cycle to ensure all electrical sensor values were correct. The tailgate motor and sensor started working perfectly after the reset, with no additional calibration needed. However, its worth mentioning that if you keep using the tailgate while its malfunctioning, you risk causing more extensive damage. In my case, I stopped using the automatic function as soon as I noticed the open tailgate issues. This likely prevented additional wear on the motor components. Since your Fox has similar electronics to my Polo and its your first tailgate repair, the fix should be straightforward. The base trim actually makes it slightly easier to access the wiring compared to higher trim levels with extra features. The sensor fault signals should clear completely once the worn wiring is replaced and the system is reset. Mine has worked flawlessly for over 2 years since the repair.

Thanks for the info about the system reset and calibration. Your experience with the Polo is really helpful since the components seem similar. I called a workshop today and booked it in for next week. They confirmed the likely sensor fault based on my description and quoted around 120€ for the complete repair including new wiring. Bit more than what you paid but still reasonable. Smart advice about not using the power tailgate function meanwhile. I have been manually closing it to avoid any extra strain on the motor. Really hoping the wiring replacement and reset fixes it completely like in your case. Good to hear your repair has lasted over 2 years without issues. The fact that my Fox is base trim and never had previous tailgate problems makes me optimistic it will be a straightforward fix. Will update once the repair is done to confirm if replacing the sensor wiring solved the problem.
