VW Golf TPMS Warning Won't Clear Despite Good Pressure

Had my last service at 148985km. Just got it checked, the workshop confirmed my front right TPMS sensor has completely failed. The pressure gauge readings were all normal, but the tire check system kept throwing errors. The mechanic found corrosion around the air valve assembly where the sensor sits. Going to need a full sensor replacement. At least it explains why the warning light wouldnt reset no matter what I tried.

Good to hear you got it properly diagnosed. That matches exactly what happened with my Passat, once corrosion sets in around the TPMS sensor housing, the unit usually needs complete replacement. The tire pressure monitoring on these VW models can be sensitive to corrosion, especially around the valve stem area. A failed sensor with corrosion damage typically wont respond to any reset attempts, which explains your persistent warning light. Since your odometer shows nearly 149000km, the original sensor has actually lasted quite well. Most TPMS sensors start failing around 120000-140000km due to battery depletion or environmental wear. Make sure the workshop includes proper sensor programming after replacement. When I had mine done, they needed about an hour total to replace the sensor, program it to the car, and clear all related fault codes from the system. The tire pressure monitoring should work perfectly after that. Keep in mind the other sensors might need attention soon too, given they're all the same age. Consider having them checked during your next service to avoid unexpected TPMS issues down the road.

Thanks for explaining the diagnosis result. Looking at the corrosion damage around the air valve, I agree a full sensor replacement makes sense. The tire check system warnings were definitely frustrating, especially since the air pressure readings showed everything was fine. The workshop quoted 295€ for the new TPMS sensor including programming, which seems in line with typical rates. They mentioned checking the other sensors too since theyre all original from 2014. Better to know if any others are close to failing. Just scheduled the repair for next week. Hopefully this will finally resolve those persistent sensor fault warnings that kept showing up. Really appreciate everyone sharing their similar experiences, helped confirm I was dealing with a common issue on these VW TPMS systems.

I faced the exact same TPMS issue on my 2016 VW Passat TDI about 6 months ago. Having some experience with these systems, I recognized the symptoms immediately as a likely sensor battery failure. The air valve mounted TPMS sensor has an internal battery that typically lasts 5-8 years. When it starts failing, the system shows persistent low tire warnings even though the actual tire pressure is correct. After scanning the error codes at home, it pointed to a sensor fault on one wheel. Took it to a workshop where they confirmed the diagnosis, one dead sensor battery. They had to replace the entire TPMS sensor unit as the batteries arent serviceable separately. Total cost was 280€ including programming the new sensor to the car. Since your Golf is from 2014, its quite likely facing the same sensor battery issue. However, to be more specific about your case, could you share: Which wheel position shows the fault, Whether the warning started gradually or suddenly, If the error shows consistently or comes and goes, If youve had any tire work done recently This would help determine if your symptoms match what I experienced or if theres something else going on.
