VW Golf: Flashing preglow indicator light and engine problems

Hi everyone, I have a VW Golf and am struggling with several engine problems: rough running, reduced engine power, shuddering at idle and the engine takes longer to get up to operating temperature. Of particular concern is that the pre-glow indicator light is flashing and the car is not picking up the throttle properly. After the fault has been cleared, the problem occurs again after about 500 meters when accelerating. The light flashes yellow, and after restarting the engine, the indicator light is initially gone, but reappears shortly afterwards, especially in 4th gear at 80 km/h. Has anyone had similar experiences or knows how to fix this problem? Many thanks in advance for your help!
