VW Jetta Hybrid Stalling Due to Faulty Ignition Coil

My Jetta hybrid is acting up with rough idle and stalling. The check engine light came on and there is noticeable jerking during acceleration. Given these symptoms, I suspect a failing ignition coil. Has anyone experienced similar issues with their hybrid? Looking for advice before heading to a mechanic since my last repair experience was not great. Car details: 2014 VW Jetta Hybrid, 134953km on the clock.

Had similar symptoms on my 2011 VW Golf Hybrid. The rough idle and jerking during acceleration pointed to ignition system problems. After thorough diagnosis, it turned out the ignition coil pack on cylinder 2 was failing intermittently, causing engine misfires and stalling. The repair involved replacing the faulty coil pack and inspecting the spark plugs. The original problem started with occasional stuttering but quickly developed into more severe symptoms. Important to note that leaving this issue unaddressed can damage the catalytic converter due to unburned fuel. Diagnosis revealed corroded connections at the coil pack, likely from moisture buildup common in hybrid engine compartments. The fix was straightforward but critical, bad coil packs can cause complete engine failure if ignored. For hybrid vehicles, it is essential to use OEM or high-quality aftermarket ignition coils due to the specific voltage requirements of the hybrid system. The symptoms you describe match classic ignition system failure patterns. Suggest getting it checked soon to prevent more serious engine damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The symptoms and diagnosis match what I am experiencing with my Jetta. The vehicle diagnostics you mentioned with cylinder 2 are particularly helpful since I am noticing similar engine hesitation patterns. Just curious, do you remember the total cost for fixing the ignition coil issue? Also, have you had any related problems since the repair? My misfire symptoms are getting worse and I want to budget accordingly before heading to the shop.

Thanks for asking about the costs. Just got back from the mechanic and got everything sorted out. The engine stalling and rough running were indeed caused by a defective ignition coil. The fix was actually simpler than expected, they found a faulty cable connection to the coil pack that was causing intermittent failures. The total repair came to 95€, which included testing the ignition system and fixing the connection. This was much better than potentially needing a full coil replacement. Vehicle diagnostics confirmed the repair was successful. Since having it fixed, the car runs perfectly smooth with no coil failure symptoms. No more jerking during acceleration or rough idle issues. It has been reliable for daily driving, and the check engine light has stayed off. The quick diagnosis and repair prevented any additional engine damage, which was my main concern.

Thanks for the advice. I wanted to share my repair experience as a follow-up. After taking my Jetta to a certified shop, their vehicle diagnostics confirmed a failing coil pack on cylinder 3. The engine hesitation and stalling symptoms matched exactly what was described here. They did a complete ignition system check and found some corrosion on the coil connectors as well. The total repair came to 280€ which included: New OEM coil pack, Cleaning all connector terminals, Full diagnostic scan, Labor costs The car now runs perfectly, no more rough idle or jerking during acceleration. The check engine light is off and engine performance is back to normal. Getting it fixed promptly definitely prevented more expensive issues down the road. Really appreciate all the helpful information shared here. It helped me better understand the problem and have an informed discussion with the mechanic about the repair.
