Thanks for sharing your experience with the audio system failure. My situation got resolved last month and the symptoms were identical. The volume control worked fine but there was complete sound distortion followed by total silence. Would you mind sharing what the repair cost in your case? In my situation, they also had to remove part of the dashboard to access and replace the amp unit. Just wondering if repair costs were similar and if you have had any other issues with the car speakers since the fix? The garage mentioned this is fairly common in older VWs, especially the early 2000s models where heat buildup affects the amp circuits over time.

Since getting the audio system fixed by the mechanic last June, everything has worked perfectly with no sound distortion or connectivity problems. The Bluetooth and USB audio both function normally now. They diagnosed it as a defective Bass speaker that was causing the complete audio failure. The total repair came to 280€ which included removing parts of the dashboard to access and replace the faulty speaker unit. Honestly quite relieved it was just the speaker rather than the full amp replacement some garages suggested might be needed. Have not experienced any sound quality issues or problems with the car speakers in the months since the repair. The audio system works exactly like new across all inputs. Seems like proper diagnosis was key since these VW models can show similar symptoms from different failing components.

Thank you all for the helpful advice. I finally got my Lupo fixed last week after finding a VW specialist mechanic. Initially worried about facing another amp replacement, I was relieved when they diagnosed a simpler issue with the auxiliary input connection and a blown fuse. The repair cost came to 175€ total, much less than expected. They found corrosion on the main connection points which was causing the radio silence. After cleaning the contacts and replacing the fuse, the volume control and all audio sources work perfectly again. The mechanic did a thorough check of the entire sound system including testing for any sound distortion through each speaker. No dashboard removal was needed in my case. Really happy with both the service and final cost, especially after my previous disappointing repair experiences. USB audio, radio and all other inputs are now working like new. Would definitely recommend getting a proper diagnosis rather than assuming the worst when dealing with total audio failure.

Had the same sound quality problems on my VW Polo TDI (2003). The audio system went completely dead across all inputs, radio silence, no USB audio, nothing from any source. After troubleshooting, it turned out the amplifier unit behind the glove compartment had failed. The main circuit board was damaged from years of vibration and heat exposure. This is a common issue in VW models from that era. The repair involved replacing the complete amplifier module and testing all car speakers individually. The work was substantial since the entire dashboard needed partial removal to access the component. While not a critical safety issue, having no audio system significantly impacts daily driving comfort. The symptoms match your case exactly, total audio failure across all sources. Would strongly suggest having the amplifier checked first before replacing any other components. This type of repair requires specific diagnostic equipment to properly test the sound system circuitry. If your model has the factory-fitted sound system, make sure the repair shop has experience with VW audio systems from that generation. The wiring layout and amplifier specifications are unique to these models.
