VW Lupo Stalling Issues Point to Faulty Camshaft Sensor

My VW Lupo diesel from 2002 (54806km) is acting up lately. It struggles to start, keeps stalling at idle, and the check engine light is now constantly on. Based on these symptoms, I suspect a faulty camshaft sensor might be the culprit. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic, so before heading back to a shop, I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who dealt with similar symptoms. Did replacing the camshaft sensor fix your issues? Any recommendations for diagnosing this properly?

The diagnostic scan showed exactly what you described, both a faulty camshaft position sensor and damaged encoder wheel. The total repair came to 720€, slightly more than yours, but included a full timing belt service since they had to remove everything anyway. The mechanic showed me the old encoder wheel, which had visible wear marks causing the erratic sensor readings and engine misfire problems.
