Thanks for the detailed response. The issue affects only the driver door, and the symptoms match what you described. Just had my service at 62183km, where they cleared the error codes, but the problem returned after a few days. Regarding your questions: The key fob works fine for all other doors No other electrical issues on that door The locking system failed suddenly during a rainstorm The loose connection theory makes sense given the timing with the rain. The door mechanism seems mechanically sound, but the electronic door handle remains unresponsive. I will have the wiring connections checked based on your experience. Much better starting point than replacing the entire door handle assembly.

Thanks for providing those additional details. The timing with the rainstorm really strengthens the loose connection theory. On my Passat, water intrusion through a slightly compromised door seal made the connection issue worse, especially around the door sensor area. When my door switch issue started acting up after rain, the workshop found slight corrosion on the connector pins near the door handle sensor. They cleaned the contacts and applied dielectric grease to prevent future oxidation. This additional step only added about 20€ to the original repair cost. Since your car door electronics failed suddenly during rain, you might want to have them check: The rubber door seal integrity around the handle area, The drain holes in the door frame for blockages, The door actuator connector for signs of water damage The fact that other doors work fine really isolates this to the driver door wiring or sensor issue. Given the similarity to my case, I would start with the wiring inspection before considering more expensive component replacements. If the workshop confirms a similar diagnosis, the full repair including weatherproofing should run between 100-150€. Worth checking if this is covered under any extended warranty, as electric door system faults sometimes qualify.

Thanks for going through the troubleshooting steps. Just confirmed an appointment with my local workshop for next week. They will check the wiring connections and door seal first, exactly as suggested. The service advisor mentioned they have seen several similar cases where water exposure affected the door sensor wiring. They quoted 130€ for diagnosis and repair, including cleaning any corroded contacts and applying protective coating to prevent future issues. Really hoping it is just the loose connection or minor corrosion causing the electric door handle problems. The door mechanism itself feels normal mechanically, so focusing on the electrical connections makes the most sense. Will update once they complete the inspection and repair. At least now I have a much better idea what to expect and can avoid unnecessarily replacing the entire door handle assembly. Really appreciate the detailed insights from your similar experience.

I had a similar issue with my 2014 Passat GTE Hybrid last year. With some experience working on car electronics, I initially thought it was the door actuator, but it turned out to be simpler. The workshop diagnosed a loose cable connection near the door handle sensor assembly. The door switch itself was fine, but the wiring harness connection had worked itself loose over time, causing intermittent failures before stopping completely. The repair involved accessing the door panel, reconnecting and securing the cable properly. Total cost was 95€, mostly labor since no parts needed replacement. Much better than replacing the entire door handle unit. Before jumping to conclusions about faulty components, you should have the wiring connections checked first. These systems are generally reliable, but connection issues are a common failure point. To provide more specific guidance about your case, could you share: Whether all doors are affected or just one? If the issue started gradually or happened suddenly? Whether you notice any other electrical oddities with the door? If the key fob itself works normally for remote locking/unlocking?
