VW Passat TDI Glow Plug System Malfunction Alert

My Passat diesel seems to have issues with the preheating system. The preheating lamp stays on constantly, along with an active check engine light. I notice smoke coming from the exhaust when accelerating. The car currently runs but not smoothly. I suspect a faulty preheater control unit might be the cause. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would be great to hear about repair experiences before taking it to a shop. Car details: 2013 VW Passat TDI with 105522km. Thanks for any input.

Had similar symptoms on my 2010 VW Golf TDI. The electrical fault turned out to be more than just the preheating unit, it was a combination of worn glow plugs and a failing control module. The vehicle heater system showed identical warning signs: constant glow plug light, check engine illuminated, and rough running especially from cold starts. The engine preheat cycle would either not complete or trigger incorrectly, leading to poor combustion and that excess smoke during acceleration. The ignition system inspection revealed corrosion at the glow plug connectors had caused a short circuit, damaging the control unit. Required complete replacement of the glow plug set, all wiring connectors, and the preheating control module to resolve the issue. For a Passat TDI with those symptoms, this points to a serious electrical system problem that needs professional diagnosis. Continuing to drive with faulty preheating can lead to starting issues and potential engine damage. Best to have it checked before the problem cascades into bigger repairs.

The car preheater system turned out to be the main culprit, but the mechanic also found corroded wiring around the glow plugs, which was causing an electrical fault in the ignition system. How much did the full repair end up costing in your case? Have you had any issues with the vehicle heater or starting system since the fix? Curious if replacing the entire preheat system solved everything long-term or if other problems emerged later.

Got the repairs done last week and glad to report my Golf is running perfectly now. The heating module and ignition system are working as intended, no more warning lights or smoke issues during cold starts. The total repair was much simpler than initially expected. The mechanic found the main issue was just a defective connection in the control unit wiring. Unlike the complete system replacement I feared might be needed, fixing the cable connection of the preheating control unit was straightforward and cost only 95€. Since the repair, the engine preheat cycle works normally and starts are smooth again. No more check engine lights or persistent glow plug warnings. The smoke during acceleration has completely disappeared too. Always good to catch these electrical issues early. A faulty connection in the control unit can sometimes mimic symptoms of more serious problems with the entire preheating system. Regular inspection of these components helps prevent bigger issues down the line.
