VW Polo Diesel Overheating Due to Air Flap Malfunction

My VW Polo diesel from 2014 (92652km) started having engine temperature issues lately. The check engine light keeps coming on and the engine seems to run hotter than usual. I suspect its related to the active air flap system in the front, but my last mechanic visit wasnt great so Im looking for some second opinions. Has anyone dealt with similar cooling system problems and can recommend what to check first? Also interested in typical repair costs for air flap issues on these models.

Thanks for confirming this is the air flap issue. Had the exact same fault code and temperature problems with my Polo last summer. Finally got it sorted out but had to wait 2 weeks for the parts. Just wondering, do you remember roughly what you paid for the repair? Also has everything been running smoothly since the air flap assembly was replaced? My cooling system is working fine now but Im always keen to hear about any long-term experiences with these fixes.

Got good news to share, after getting the active air flap system fixed, everything has been running perfectly for months now. The thermal management is spot on and no more fault codes or check engine lights showing up. The final bill came to 590€ for replacing the defective electromechanism. Steep price but worth it for proper engine cooling. The diagnostic scan confirmed it was definitely the air flap control unit causing all the temperature fluctuations. Really glad I got it sorted properly at a shop that knew what they were doing. These VW active air flap issues need specialized attention but once fixed, they typically stay fixed. My engine temps have been completely stable since the repair, even on long highway drives. Just keep an eye on your temperature gauge for a while to be sure, but if your repair was done right like mine was, you shouldnt have any more cooling problems from the air flap system.

Thanks everyone, wanted to share my repair experience too. Finally took it to a specialist VW shop last week after getting tired of the constant check engine warnings. The mechanic immediately recognized the symptoms and confirmed the grille shutter system was faulty. Total repair cost was 620€ which included the new flap motor assembly and programming. Pretty expensive but the cooling system is working perfectly now. Engine temperature stays exactly where it should and no more warning lights. What a relief to have it properly diagnosed and fixed. The whole job took about 4 hours since they had to remove quite a bit to access the air flap mechanism. But the shop really knew what they were doing and walked me through the whole repair. Now I know why my previous mechanic struggled with it, these active air flap issues need specialized diagnostic equipment and experience with VW systems. Lesson learned about going to the right place first time!
