VW Polo Engine Stalls: Faulty Purge Valve Alert

My Polo from 2018 (87000km, gasoline) keeps stalling at idle and the check engine light is on. The last mechanic mentioned it could be the tank ventilation system or purge valve causing issues. Anyone experienced something similar and can recommend a trustworthy repair approach? Want to avoid another expensive misdiagnosis.

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2018 VW Polo experiencing engine stalling at idle, with the check engine light on. The issue is suspected to be related to the tank ventilation system or a faulty purge valve. Similar cases suggest that problems with the evaporative emissions system, including clogged purge lines, a failing pressure sensor, or a stuck purge valve, can cause these symptoms. Recommended solutions include cleaning the vapor line system, replacing the purge valve, and testing the entire tank ventilation system to resolve the stalling issue effectively.

Last month my Golf TSI 2015 showed similar symptoms, stalling at idle with check engine light illumination. The tank ventilation system was indeed the culprit. The mechanic found multiple issues: clogged purge lines, a failing pressure sensor, and a stuck purge valve. These components are part of the evaporative emissions system that manages fuel vapor from the tank. When they malfunction, the engine receives incorrect air-fuel mixtures, especially at idle. The repair involved: Cleaning the entire vapor line system, Replacing the purge valve, Installing a new pressure sensor, Testing the complete tank ventilation system This was a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as continued operation could have damaged the engine over time. The stalling problem completely resolved after the repair. For accurate diagnosis, ask the mechanic to specifically check: 1. Purge valve operation 2. Pressure sensor readings 3. All vapor lines for blockages 4. Tank ventilation system integrity These symptoms are common across several VW models from that generation, and postponing repairs typically leads to more extensive problems.

Had exactly the same issues on my VW last winter. The engine light came on and the car kept stalling at idle. After replacing the gas cap first (which was cheap but didnt help), they found problems with the emission system and purge valve. Sounds identical to your case. They fixed my fuel tank ventilation completely and its been running perfect since then. The stalling is completely gone. Have you managed to get it repaired yet? Curious about what you paid for the fix, would be good to compare costs since these issues seem common on VWs.

Yes, got it fixed last week and the stalling issue is completely gone. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the EVAP system causing problems. The purge valve and surrounding hoses were clogged with debris, restricting proper vapor flow from the fuel tank. Total repair cost was 175€ which covered cleaning the hoses and testing the entire system. Much more reasonable than I initially feared, especially compared to the potential engine damage from leaving it unfixed. Good call on checking the gas cap first, its often the simplest solution for check engine lights related to the fuel system. Though in cases like ours, the tank ventilation system needed proper attention. The car runs perfectly smooth at idle now, just like when it was new.

Thanks for sharing your experience. After reading about similar cases, I took my Polo to a specialized shop last Tuesday. The diagnostic test showed the purge valve was stuck open, causing the EVAP system to malfunction. The repair bill came to 220€ including: New purge valve, System cleaning, Pressure sensor testing, Labor costs Got the car back yesterday and the difference is remarkable, no more stalling at idle and the check engine light is finally off. The mechanic showed me the old parts and explained how debris in the system caused the failure. Glad I didnt waste more time trying quick fixes. The proper repair was worth every cent, considering how smoothly the car runs now. Will definitely keep an eye on the tank ventilation system during future maintenance.

I'm having a VW vento 2015 model, I do have whistle sound at idle, oil cap, and dip stick suction, poor performance or poor throttle response and stalling at idle. I replaced the Suction Jet pump and the symptoms are persisting. Finally found, disconnecting purge Vale hose goes to crancase site disappear whistle sound and we found there is no power supply to the purge valve circuit. Now we are trying to see where it went wrong on the power side.

It sounds like you're on the right track by identifying the lack of power supply to the purge valve circuit. I recommend checking the fuse related to the EVAP system to ensure it's not blown. If the fuse is intact, inspect the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage or corrosion that might be interrupting the power supply. If you're unable to locate the issue, it might be beneficial to consult a professional to avoid further complications. Let me know how it goes or if you have any more questions!
