VW Sharan Diesel Stalling: Fuel System Fault Alert

Looking for help with my 2019 VW Sharan diesel. The engine keeps stalling at idle and the check engine light stays on. After reading the error codes, there seems to be a fuel system related fault. I suspect a faulty sensor, possibly the fuel level sensor, but Im not completely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Mainly interested in what parts needed replacement and the final fix from your workshop.

I had a very similar issue with my 2017 VW Touran diesel last year. Being someone with basic car maintenance experience, I first tried checking the obvious things, but when the car dashboard kept showing the check engine light, I knew it needed professional attention. The symptoms were exactly like yours, engine stalling at idle and persistent warning lights. My fuel system was showing similar error codes. Initially, I also thought it was a sensor fault, but after taking it to the workshop, it turned out to be a blown fuse connected to the fuel pump circuit. The repair was straightforward, they replaced the faulty fuse and ran diagnostics to ensure the fuel system was working properly. Total cost was 52€, including the diagnostic check. Since the fix, everything has been running smoothly with no recurring issues. To help more specifically with your case, could you share: Which error codes exactly is your system showing? Does the stalling happen more frequently when the fuel tank is at a certain level? Have you noticed any unusual fuel consumption lately? Are there any other warning lights besides the check engine light?

Thanks for the detailed response. At my last service check (42449km), they actually tested the fuel pump and it was working fine. The error code Im getting is P0193, which points to a fuel rail pressure sensor issue. The stalling mostly happens when the tank is less than quarter full. The fuel gauge readings have been inconsistent lately, sometimes jumping between levels even when the car is stationary. No other warning lights besides the check engine light. The fuel consumption seems normal based on my calculations. Just wanted to know if anyone else had similar sensor issues before I take it back to the workshop. A faulty sensor seems more likely than a fuel pump problem in my case, given the symptoms.

Thanks for providing those extra details. On my 2017 Touran, I actually dealt with that exact P0193 error code after my initial fuse issue was fixed. The inconsistent fuel gauge readings combined with the stalling when fuel is low strongly suggests a car sensor problem rather than a mechanical fuel system issue. In my case, the fuel rail pressure sensor was indeed faulty and needed replacement. The car electronics were getting incorrect pressure readings, causing the engine management system to adjust fuel delivery incorrectly. This matches your symptoms, especially the stalling at idle and erratic fuel gauge behavior. The sensor replacement cost me 185€ including labor. Since the fix, both the check engine light and stalling issues completely disappeared. The fuel gauge now shows consistent readings regardless of fuel level. Before you head to the workshop, make sure to mention: The P0193 error code, The correlation between stalling and low fuel levels, The inconsistent fuel gauge behavior, That the fuel pump was recently tested and cleared This information will help them diagnose the sensor fault more quickly and accurately. Based on my experience, they should be able to confirm if its the same issue I had with the fuel rail pressure sensor.

Thanks for the input. After hearing about these similar experiences, I feel more confident that my 2019 Sharan has a fuel sensor issue rather than a pump problem. The symptoms match exactly, P0193 code, stalling at low fuel levels, and unreliable fuel gauge readings. I will schedule a workshop visit next week and specifically ask them to check the fuel rail pressure sensor. Based on the repair costs mentioned, I should budget around 200€ for the fix, which seems reasonable. It brings peace of mind knowing that once the sensor is replaced, the car dashboard warnings and stalling issues should clear up completely. Will update this thread after the repair to confirm if replacing the fuel sensor solved the problems. Thanks again for helping me narrow down the likely cause before taking it to the workshop.
