Thanks for sharing your experience with the fuel door release mechanism. Your situation sounds identical to what I went through. Did you keep track of the repair costs? The lock actuator on my Sharan needed full replacement too, but wondering if you also had any recurring electrical faults afterward? My dashboard occasionally still shows unusual errors even though the fuel door works perfectly now. Just trying to figure out if I need another workshop visit or if these minor glitches are normal after this type of repair work.

The total repair came to 210€ for replacing the faulty lock actuator and fixing the linkage. Since the repair, my fuel door release has worked flawlessly with no issues. The electric actuator replacement solved all the problems completely, no more error messages or electrical glitches on the dashboard. If your dashboard is still showing unusual errors after the repair, that definitely needs checking. A properly fixed fuel door system should not cause lingering electrical faults. The key fob and all other electronic functions should work normally once the actuator is replaced correctly. From experience, these continuing glitches often point to either incomplete fault code clearing after the repair or potentially another electrical issue that was masked by the original fuel door problem. A reputable workshop should be able to diagnose this fairly quickly with proper diagnostic equipment.

I finally got my fuel door issue sorted out. After your advice, I took it to a certified workshop where they diagnosed the problem properly. The mechanic found that my lock actuator was completely dead and needed full replacement. They also discovered some damaged wiring that was causing those unusual dashboard errors. The repair took about 2 hours and cost 280€ total, a bit more than expected but they did a thorough job. The release button now works perfectly and all those annoying error messages are gone. The key fob functions are back to normal too. Really glad I didnt try fixing the electric actuator myself. The wiring turned out to be more complex than I thought, and the mechanic showed me how the release mechanism connects to multiple systems. Worth every cent to have it done right the first time.

Had the exact same problem on my 2016 VW Touran TDI. The fuel door release mechanism completely failed, showing similar symptoms, unresponsive button and the manual cable release not working. The root cause was a faulty electric actuator in the fuel door locking system. When these actuators fail, they often trigger electrical faults that can affect other vehicle systems through the CAN bus network. The release mechanism needed complete replacement since both the electrical and mechanical components were compromised. This repair requires removing door panels and partial disassembly of the fuel door assembly. The job is more complex than it seems because accessing the release mechanism means working around various wiring harnesses and interior trim pieces. It turned out to be a serious issue requiring immediate attention, as a stuck fuel door makes refueling impossible and the electrical fault can potentially affect other car systems. The repair involved replacing both the actuator unit and the cable release assembly. Would strongly recommend having this checked by a certified workshop, as improper repairs can damage the electrical system further.
