VW Suran Engine Overheating Due to Stuck Air Flap

Just had my latest service done last month. After running a diagnostic scan, the mechanic found the grille shutter and flap motor were indeed stuck. The thermal management system was not working properly due to this issue. The repair cost was 650€ including parts and labor. Once fixed, the check engine light went off and engine temperatures returned to normal. You might want to check if your car is still under extended warranty before proceeding with repairs. My engine temperatures now stay firmly in the normal range, even during extended highway driving. The cooling system is performing perfectly after the fix. Worth mentioning the mechanic also flushed the coolant system while doing the repair, just to be thorough.

Thanks for the update on your repair results. The symptoms and fix match exactly what I experienced with my CrossFox. The diagnostic scan revealing the stuck grille shutter was crucial for pinpointing the issue. The repair cost was similar too, I paid 590€ compared to your 650€. The thermal management system really is sensitive to these flap motor failures. When the active air flap gets stuck, it completely throws off the cooling system efficiency. Good call on getting the coolant flush done during the repair. I skipped that step and ended up having it done a few months later anyway. The complete service helps ensure the whole cooling system works at peak efficiency. For anyone else reading with similar symptoms, getting a proper diagnostic scan is essential. The check engine light combined with overheating often points to grille shutter issues in these models, but proper diagnosis prevents replacing the wrong parts.

Thanks everyone who replied with advice. It was helpful having others confirm their similar experiences with flap motor failures. Getting that diagnostic scan really made the difference in identifying the exact problem. Just to wrap up what worked for my overheating issues: Diagnostic scan confirmed stuck grille shutter and flap motor, Complete replacement of the flap motor assembly was needed, Full coolant flush completed during repair, Total cost came to 650€, Thermal management system now works perfectly The cooling system is performing exactly as it should after the fix. Engine temperatures stay normal even on long drives. For others with similar symptoms, definitely get the air intake system checked, particularly the flap motor operation. Worth every cent to have it properly diagnosed and repaired rather than guessing at the problem.

I had a very similar issue with my 2014 VW CrossFox, which shares many components with your model. As someone with moderate car repair experience, I can relate to your cooling system concerns. The symptoms matched exactly, car overheating and check engine light illuminated. After multiple tests, the workshop confirmed the air intake flap motor had failed, causing the flaps to remain closed. This restricted proper airflow through the cooling system, leading to the overheating issues. The repair involved: 1. Diagnostic testing to confirm flap motor failure 2. Replacing the complete flap motor assembly 3. Recalibrating the new mechanism 4. Full system check to ensure proper operation Total cost was 590€ for parts and labor. Since the repair, the cooling system has worked perfectly with no recurring issues. Before suggesting specific solutions, could you provide: Current mileage, Any unusual sounds from the front of the engine, Whether the overheating occurs more at idle or highway speeds, Recent maintenance history, Any other warning lights besides check engine This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or might be caused by something else in the cooling system.
