Last service done at 31778km and transfer fluid was renewed. The shift feels bit smoother now but still getting rough shifts when cold. Noticing slight transfer fluid spots after parking overnight. Think it needs fixing soon to avoid bigger issues. Rough shifts happen mostly between 2nd and 3rd gear. Currently getting quotes from workshops since I want to prevent major transmission damage from oil wear. Thanks for the detailed response and repair cost info, helps a lot with planning.

Having gone through this exact issue, I can confirm that those fluid spots you mentioned are a red flag. In my case with the 2012 VW Gol, ignoring similar spots led to accelerated gear wear in the transfer case. The cold shifting problems between 2nd and 3rd gear mirror what I experienced before my repair. The fresh transfer fluid might mask the issue temporarily, but if you are seeing leaks, the problem will likely worsen. My gear grinding started exactly this way, rough cold shifts that seemed to improve with warm fluid. When my workshop did the repair, they found that the transfer case oil leak had allowed metal particles to accumulate, causing additional wear to the gear surfaces. Getting it fixed at 330€ was actually fortunate, waiting longer would have required a complete transfer case replacement. Since your symptoms match my previous experience so closely, I strongly recommend getting it repaired soon. The combination of rough shifting and visible fluid spots suggests the issue is progressing similarly to what I dealt with. Would suggest checking the transfer fluid level weekly until you can get it into a workshop. This helps monitor if the leak is getting worse and prevents running low on fluid, which could cause severe gear damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience and the details about your repair. These symptoms definitely worry me, especially the fluid spots you mentioned. Will schedule a workshop visit next week since I dont want to risk more serious gear wear or transmission damage. Currently at 35000km, so the leaks starting this early is concerning. The cold shifting between 2nd and 3rd is getting more noticeable each day. Will keep checking fluid levels until the repair appointment like you suggested. Really helps to know what repairs you needed and the approximate costs. Based on the quotes I got, repair costs should be similar around 350€ for my model. Going to document the fluid spots and rough shifting patterns to show the workshop. The gear grinding symptoms you described make me want to get this fixed before it gets worse. Really appreciate the detailed information about your experience with a similar transmission problem.

I experienced something very similar with my 2012 VW Gol, which shares many mechanical components with your Spacefox. Having some experience with transmission issues, I can say these symptoms sound familiar. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, rough shifting and slipping, especially during cold starts. Initially thought it was just oil wear, but it turned out to be more serious. The workshop diagnosed defective gears in the transfer case, which was causing the inconsistent shifting pattern. The repair involved replacing several worn components in the transfer case and addressing oil leakage issues that had developed. Total cost was 330€, including new gear oil and labor. The repair prevented more extensive mechanical wear that could have occurred if left unaddressed. To provide more specific advice for your situation, could you share: Current mileage on your vehicle? When was the last transmission fluid change? Are you noticing any transfer fluid leaks under the car? Does the problem occur more in specific gears? These details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced and whether immediate attention is needed. Based on my experience, I would not recommend driving it much longer without having it checked, as transmission problems tend to worsen quickly and can lead to more expensive repairs.
