VW T-Cross Owner Reports Major DSG Gearbox Failure

My VW T-Cross (2019, gasoline) is having serious gearbox issues. The automatic gearbox shows multiple symptoms including gear slipping, grinding noises during shifts, and unresponsive paddle shifters. The transmission eventually went into emergency mode. I suspect the transmission control module might be faulty, but want to confirm before proceeding with repairs. Has anyone experienced similar problems with their T-Cross? What was the actual issue and how was it resolved by your workshop? Looking particularly for information about repair costs and whether it required a full control unit replacement or if there were other solutions. Any insights would be greatly appreciated, especially from those who have dealt with similar transmission repair scenarios.

Having owned a VW T-Roc 2018 gasoline with similar gearbox issues, I can share my recent experience with transmission repair. I have some experience working on VW vehicles and faced nearly identical symptoms, gear slipping, grinding during shifts, and the transmission emergency mode activating. After diagnostic testing, my workshop confirmed the automotive ECU controlling the transmission was defective. The car computer showed multiple error codes related to the transmission control module. The repair involved a complete replacement of the control unit and subsequent programming to sync with the vehicle systems. The total repair cost was 1000€, which included the new control module, programming, and labor. The fix resolved all transmission-related issues, and the gearbox has been working perfectly since. To provide more specific advice about your situation, could you share: Current mileage on your T-Cross, When these symptoms first appeared, Any warning lights on the dashboard, Whether you notice the issues more in specific driving conditions, If any previous transmission work was done This information would help determine if your case matches what I experienced with the control module failure.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My latest service was done at 102000km, just about 4000km ago, and the symptoms started appearing shortly after. Currently at 105970km. The transmission diagnosis at my workshop initially pointed to a mechanical issue, but after running more thorough tests with their car computer, they also suspect the transmission control module. The grinding noise gets worse in cold weather, and the gear slipping mainly occurs during highway driving. No transmission repair work has been done before, and the check engine light started flashing intermittently before the gearbox went into emergency mode. The automotive ECU is showing similar error codes to what you described. This input about the control unit replacement cost is really helpful for planning the repair budget.

Good to hear back about your T-Cross transmission problems. The symptoms and timing align closely with what I experienced, especially the cold weather sensitivity and highway gear slipping. This further confirms my suspicion about the transmission control unit being the root cause. In my case, the transmission diagnosis also started with checking mechanical components, but the electronic issues were ultimately the main problem. The error codes from the automotive ECU proved crucial for accurate diagnosis. After my control module replacement, I noticed immediate improvements: Clean gear shifts without grinding, Responsive paddle shifters, No more emergency mode activation, Resolved cold weather performance issues My transmission repair actually cost slightly less than initially quoted at 950€ since no additional mechanical work was needed. Given your similar mileage and symptoms, you might be looking at comparable costs. One suggestion based on my experience: have the workshop check the wiring harness connected to the transmission control unit. In some cases, damaged wiring can cause similar symptoms and might be a cheaper fix if thats the actual issue. The repair completely resolved my automatic gearbox problems, and 30000km later, everything still works perfectly.

Thanks for the detailed responses. After comparing my T-Cross transmission problems with similar cases, I decided to proceed with the transmission control module replacement. The workshop completed the repair yesterday and charged 980€ total, including programming the new car computer and labor costs. I can confirm the transmission repair has resolved all the issues, no more grinding noises, gear slipping is gone, and the paddle shifters work perfectly again. The transmission control is much smoother now, especially during cold starts and highway driving. They also checked the wiring harness as suggested and found it was in good condition. The automotive ECU now shows no error codes, and the emergency mode hasn't activated since the repair. Really appreciate all the input that helped me make an informed decision about this repair. Will update if any new transmission problems develop, but so far everything is working exactly as it should.
