VW T-Cross Stalling Issues Traced to Fuel Sensor

Looking for advice on my 2019 VW T-Cross that keeps stalling at idle with check engine light on. The car electronics show a stored error code, and I suspect a faulty fuel sensor might be causing these issues. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in how the problem was diagnosed and fixed at your workshop. The stalling happens out of nowhere when the car is idling, making it quite unpredictable. Would appreciate hearing about repair costs and time needed for the fix, especially if it involved replacing the fuel tank sensor or related components.

Having dealt with a similar issue on my 2017 VW T-Roc, I can share my experience as someone with moderate car repair knowledge. The symptoms you describe match what I encountered, unusual stalling and check engine light. After initial diagnosis, the workshop found that the fuel sensor was giving incorrect readings due to a blown fuse in the fuel system circuit. The fix was straightforward: replacing the defective fuse that was causing the sensor fault. Total cost was 52€ including diagnostic time. The repair took about an hour since they had to verify the fuel sensor was working properly after the fuse replacement. To better assist you, could you share: What error code is stored in your system? Does the fuel gauge show irregular readings? Have you noticed any other electrical issues? When was your last fuel system maintenance? These details would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced or if it might be a different underlying problem with the fuel tank components or sensor wiring. I suggest having a professional workshop check the fuse box and run a complete diagnostic on the fuel system before replacing any expensive parts.

Thanks for the analysis, very helpful details. My case seems quite similar. After 70614km and last month's service, I started noticing these issues. The car dashboard shows error code P0172, pointing to a rich fuel mixture. The fuel gauge does occasionally flutter between readings, especially when the tank is around half full. Haven't spotted other electrical gremlins yet. Based on your experience, I will have the fuse box and fuel system checked first before going for more expensive repairs. Good to know it might be something relatively simple like a blown fuse causing the faulty sensor readings. Would you mind sharing if the stalling completely stopped after your repair? Just want to make sure I'm heading in the right direction with this diagnosis.

Thanks for the follow-up. The stalling on my T-Roc completely stopped after the fuse replacement, and the fuel gauge returned to normal operation. Your error code P0172 matches what I encountered, which reinforces my belief that we faced the same issue. The fuel gauge flutter you mentioned at half tank is exactly what I experienced, it's a classic symptom of an electrical issue affecting the fuel level sensor. The fact that it started after routine service is also interesting, as sometimes these problems can emerge after work is done near the fuel tank or electrical systems. I tracked the issue for several months after the repair, and the car electronics never showed the error code again. The fuel system maintained steady performance, and the unusual stalling never returned. The workshop also cleaned the fuel tank sensor connections while they were checking the system, which might have helped prevent future issues. Given the matching symptoms and error code, starting with the fuse box and fuel system diagnostics should save you time and money compared to immediately replacing major components.

Thanks everyone, just wanted to close this thread with a positive update. Took the car to my regular workshop and you were right about checking the simpler fixes first. The mechanic found two blown fuses affecting the fuel sensor and replaced them for 45€ including diagnostic time. After a week of driving, the stalling has completely stopped and the fuel gauge now shows consistent readings. The check engine light is gone and no more error codes are showing up. The level sensor and wider fuel system are working perfectly now. Really glad I asked here before authorizing more expensive repairs. Sometimes these fuel sensor faults can be fixed without major part replacements. Will definitely check fuses first if I encounter similar issues in the future. Thanks especially to for pointing me in the right direction with the fuse box check. Saved me both time and money with this straightforward fix.
