VW Taigo Coolant Warning: Key Checks Before Shop Visit

Hi everyone, my check engine light recently came on in my 2022 VW Taigo (gas engine, 136571km). The error code seems to point to low coolant levels. After a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, I am looking for advice. Has anyone dealt with similar coolant issues in their Taigo? I am wondering if this could be related to the water pump, radiator hoses, or if there might be a leak in the cooling system. What should I check first, and can anyone recommend what to look out for when visiting a repair shop for this issue?

Had a similar issue with my 2019 VW T-Cross last month. The coolant issue turned out to be more complex than just low fluid levels. The main problem was failing radiator hoses that had developed tiny cracks, causing a slow coolant leak. First signs were similar, check engine light and coolant warning. Initial inspection revealed dried coolant residue near the connections. The radiator cap also showed signs of wear, which prevented proper pressure maintenance in the system. When getting this checked, make sure they: Pressure test the entire cooling system, Inspect all radiator hoses for cracks or swelling, Check for air pockets in the system, Test the radiator cap seal, Verify the water pump operation This can be a serious issue if left unchecked, as continuous coolant loss can lead to engine overheating. The repair involved replacing multiple radiator hoses and the radiator cap. During the fix, they also found and cleared several air pockets that had formed in the system. Worth having this checked soon, as cooling system problems tend to escalate quickly if ignored.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the coolant system repair. My VW Taigo had very similar symptoms last year. I initially thought it was just a minor coolant leak but ended up needing both radiator hoses replaced along with a new water pump. The cooling fan was also making unusual noises during the repair inspection, so they replaced that as well. Really glad I got it all fixed at once since these issues tend to be connected. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the total repair cost was for your T-Cross? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix or have you noticed any other cooling system issues?

Glad to provide an update on my T-Cross coolant system repair. After the fix last month, everything has been running perfectly with no cooling issues. The coolant reservoir now maintains proper levels and the cooling fan operates quietly. The total cost breakdown for my repair was significantly less than expected, just 95€ for fixing what turned out to be a faulty cable connection to the cooling system sensors. Once the mechanic corrected this connection issue, the system started functioning normally and the coolant level too low warning disappeared. This was much more straightforward than your situation with the radiator hoses and water pump replacement. Mine turned out to be just an electrical issue rather than actual component damage. The engine overheating risks were eliminated once they fixed that simple connection problem. Always good to catch these cooling system problems early before they escalate into more serious engine damage. A properly functioning coolant system is crucial for preventing overheating issues down the road.

Thanks for your insights. I finally took my Taigo to a repair shop last week. The mechanic found multiple issues causing the coolant leak, cracked radiator hoses, a failing water pump, and air pockets throughout the system. The total repair came to 780€, which included: New radiator hoses, Water pump replacement, Complete system flush, Fresh coolant, Labor costs The mechanic pressure tested everything after the repairs. They also showed me the old parts which clearly needed replacement. The check engine light is now off and the coolant level stays consistent. The engine runs much smoother and maintains proper temperature. Really relieved to have this fixed properly. Having experienced a major engine overheating issue with my previous car, I know how important a well-maintained cooling system is. The investment was worth it for the peace of mind.
