VW Taigo Steering Sensor Issues and Repair Guide

My 2022 VW Taigo is showing signs of steering problems that started recently. The steering feels much heavier than normal, and the wheel vibrates noticeably while driving. After some research, I suspect the steering angle sensor might be defective, but I want to confirm before heading to a workshop. Has anyone experienced similar steering sensor issues with their Taigo? Would be great to hear about your repair experiences, especially regarding diagnosis and repair costs. Also interested in knowing if wheel alignment was part of the fix, as the vibration makes me wonder if its related to alignment problems. Any tips on what to specifically tell the mechanic would be helpful.

I had a similar issue with my 2020 VW T-Cross which shares many components with the Taigo. Having some experience with electronic systems in modern cars, I suspected the steering sensor when my car started showing comparable symptoms. The electronic stability system relies heavily on the steering angle sensor for proper function. In my case, the sensor needed recoding due to faulty calibration. The steering column was fine mechanically, but the sensor readings were incorrect, causing the system to apply incorrect assist levels. The fix at my workshop involved: Complete diagnosis of the steering sensor, Recalibration and coding of the unit, Testing the electronic stability system, Final road test to confirm proper function Total cost was 195€ including diagnostic work. The repair resolved both the heavy steering feel and vibration issues completely. Before suggesting more specific advice, could you provide: Current mileage on your Taigo, Whether any warning lights are showing, If the symptoms change when driving at different speeds, When exactly the problem started appearing This information would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced with my T-Cross steering sensor problems.

Just had my latest service done at 87306km and the mechanic found no obvious mechanical issues with the steering system. Since my post, I noticed that the heavy steering occurs mostly at lower speeds and the warning lights remain off. The vibration seems to get worse when turning rather than driving straight. Based on your T-Cross experience, these symptoms do sound similar. Did your repair also include a wheel alignment check? I am wondering if sensor replacement and alignment problems might be connected in my case.

Thanks for the additional details about your Taigo. My T-Cross situation was indeed very similar, especially with the heavy steering at low speeds. After my steering sensor repair, the workshop did perform a wheel alignment check as part of their diagnostic process. The connection between steering sensor issues and alignment problems is interesting, in my case, what seemed like alignment problems was actually the traction control system responding incorrectly to faulty sensor data. The electronic stability system was getting confused, leading to those vibrations during turns. My repair actually went a bit differently than initially expected: First steering sensor replacement attempt did not fully resolve the issue, Workshop found the electronic stability module needed recalibration, Full alignment check showed everything was within specs, Second test drive confirmed all systems working properly Total ended up being 320€ including the alignment check. Definitely worth mentioning both the low-speed steering effort and turn-specific vibrations to your mechanic, these were key symptoms in diagnosing my sensor issue correctly. Since your mileage is similar to when my problems occurred (around 85000km), and the symptoms match so closely, requesting a full sensor system check along with alignment verification would be smart.

Based on your feedback and compared to my initial symptoms, I feel more confident now that my Taigo has a steering sensor issue rather than just alignment problems. The specific detail about vibrations being worse during turns matches exactly what I am experiencing. It is reassuring to hear that the fix for your T-Cross was mainly electronic rather than mechanical. I will schedule an appointment and specifically request: Complete steering sensor diagnostics, Electronic stability system check, Verification of alignment specs The 320€ cost range helps set realistic expectations for the repair. Since the symptoms are nearly identical to what you described, especially the heavy steering at low speeds and the turn-specific vibrations, I expect similar diagnostic steps will be needed for my Taigo. Thank you for sharing the detailed breakdown of your repair process, it helps me better understand what to expect at the workshop.
