VW Taos Alternator Failure Draining Battery Power

Thanks for sharing that experience. My VW Taos is showing the same symptoms now, battery low warnings, weak electronics, and starting problems. Was debating between changing just the battery or going for the full alternator replacement. Since your fix worked out, would you mind sharing what the total cost was for the alternator job? Also curious if you encountered any other electrical issues after the repair was done. My serpentine belt looks good too, so hoping the alternator is the only problem needing attention.

After getting my alternator replaced for 960€, every electrical issue disappeared completely. The repair was worth every cent since the car won't start problems and voltage drop warnings never came back. The mechanic confirmed the old alternator was failing intermittently, which explained those unusual battery low alerts. They tested the entire charging system during installation to ensure no other components were damaged. The starter motor and battery both checked out fine once the faulty generator was replaced. For peace of mind, they also verified the serpentine belt tension and condition during the repair. Its always smart to check related components when dealing with charging system problems. Its been 8 months since the fix and all electrical systems are working perfectly, no more dim lights, slow accessories, or warning messages. Getting the generator replaced rather than just changing the battery was definitely the right call for my situation.

Finally went to the mechanic today to get the alternator replaced. The symptoms matched exactly what others described, unusual battery warnings and weak electronics throughout. Total cost came to 890€ including parts and labor. The mechanic showed me the old alternator which had obvious wear on the brushes and bearings. They completed a full charging system test after installing the new unit to confirm everything was working properly. The battery and starter tested fine once the alternator issue was resolved. Been driving for a few hours since the repair and what a difference, no more car won't start anxiety or voltage drop warnings. All electrical systems are back to full strength. Really glad I went ahead with the alternator replacement instead of just changing the battery. Thanks everyone for helping diagnose this alternator issue. The repair shop confirmed it was indeed the root cause of all those electrical problems. Now I can finally drive without constantly watching for warning lights.

Had the exact same symptoms on my 2020 VW Tiguan last winter. The charging system started acting up with dim lights and slow power windows. Battery low warnings appeared out of nowhere, even right after driving. The voltage drop test initially showed borderline readings, making diagnosis tricky. After a thorough check, the alternator was outputting inconsistent voltage, sometimes normal, sometimes way below spec. This intermittent behavior is typical for failing alternators. The alternator replacement was unavoidable since it was causing strain on the entire car electronics system. The repair involved removing several components to access the alternator housing. The starter motor was also checked during the repair since both systems work closely together. After replacement, all electrical issues disappeared completely. The battery maintained proper charge and all accessories worked normally again. This was a serious repair that required specialized diagnostic equipment and several hours of labor. Important tip: When the charging system shows signs of failure, getting it fixed quickly prevents additional strain on the battery and other electrical components.
