VW Taos Brake System Failure Symptoms & Diagnosis

My Taos has 143553km on it since the last service in August. The brake pedal definitely feels spongy and requires more pressure than usual. No unusual sounds, but the symptoms started appearing gradually over the past 2 weeks. Have not had any recent brake work done. The ABS system light started flashing intermittently last week. I noticed the brake performance getting worse especially during highway driving. The pressure sensor warning comes on more frequently during longer trips. Really hoping this can be resolved without major replacement parts being needed.

Based on your additional details, Im even more convinced your Taos is experiencing the same issue my Tiguan had. The spongy brake pedal combined with gradually worsening performance strongly suggests air in the hydraulic brakes system, especially since you havent had recent brake work. The ABS light flashing and pressure sensor warnings during longer trips are typical when the brake booster isnt receiving consistent pressure signals due to air bubbles. The highway driving symptoms make sense, as the system heats up and air bubbles expand under those conditions. The good news is that if its similar to my case, this should be fixable without major parts replacement. The diagnostic tools at the workshop confirmed my brake booster and sensors were actually fine, the air in the system was just causing false readings. I recommend getting it checked soon though. A proper brake system bleeding service should resolve these symptoms, just like it did on my Tiguan. The entire hydraulic brake system needs to be bled thoroughly, not just a quick bleed at one wheel. The intermittent ABS light suggests getting this addressed promptly for safety reasons. While my repair was relatively straightforward, waiting too long could potentially stress other brake system components.

Thanks for the detailed response and sharing your experience. This gives me some hope that my Taos might just need a thorough brake system bleeding rather than expensive replacement parts. The symptoms do sound very similar to what you experienced. Will book it in at the workshop this week to have them check the hydraulic brakes and run a full diagnostic. Good point about not waiting too long, safety is my top priority here. The ABS system warnings are concerning enough that I want this resolved quickly. My main worry was needing a new brake booster or major components replaced, so Im relieved to hear this could potentially be fixed with proper bleeding. Will update once the workshop diagnoses the actual issue. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain your similar experience and the likely cause of these symptoms.

Having some experience with VW brake systems, I dealt with a similar issue on my 2021 VW Tiguan. The symptoms you describe match what I experienced, deteriorating brake performance and error messages. After taking it to the workshop, they found the brake system was improperly bled, causing air in the hydraulic brakes. The mechanic explained that air bubbles in the system were affecting the brake booster and pressure sensor readings, triggering those error codes. The fix involved a proper brake system bleeding procedure, which cost 90€. The workshop used specialized diagnostic equipment to ensure the pressure sensor was functioning correctly after the procedure. The brake pedal feel improved immediately, and the error messages disappeared. Before suggesting specific fixes for your case, it would help to know: Is the brake pedal feeling spongy or requiring more force than usual? Are you hearing any unusual sounds when braking? When did these symptoms first appear, gradually or suddenly? Have you had any recent brake work done? These details would help determine if your issue is similar to what I experienced with my Tiguan, or if replacement parts might be needed.
