VW Tiguan 2018 problems with the engine, engine indicator light keeps coming on
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2018 VW Tiguan is experiencing issues such as black smoke during acceleration, a check engine light, loss of power, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust odor. These symptoms suggest a potential problem with the exhaust aftertreatment system, possibly due to a faulty lambda (oxygen) sensor. A similar case with a VW Golf was resolved by replacing the defective sensor, which restored the vehicle's performance. It is advised to address the issue promptly to prevent further engine or exhaust system damage.

Hey, thanks for the info! Can you remember how much you paid to replace the sensor? And did you have any other problems after that or was that the end of it? Best regards!

Hey, no problem, happy to help! After I went to the mechanic, the exhaust aftertreatment malfunction was completely rectified. Replacing the defective lambda sensor cost me a total of €375. Since then, my Golf has been running perfectly again and has had no further problems. Best regards!

Hi, thanks for your quick response! That sounds financially feasible. So I probably won't be able to avoid going to the workshop. I hope that in my case it's just the sensor and no major repairs are needed. I'll take care of it soon and keep you posted on how it goes. Best regards!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2017 VW Golf. In my case, it was also one of the lambda sensors (oxygen sensors) that was defective. Symptoms were also black smoke, check engine light and loss of power. The exhaust leak and the strong exhaust odor also strongly indicate this. The workshop replaced the faulty sensor. Although this was nothing directly life-threatening, in the long term such a defect can severely impair the engine and the exhaust gas purification systems. So it is better to have it repaired at an early stage. Best regards!
