Last service was at 80000km. Interesting you mention similar symptoms. Just got back from a certified shop where they found faulty wiring between the microphone and the head unit. They had to remove part of the headliner to access the connections. The voice recognition system completely failed their diagnostics test. The volume control and general sound quality were fine for music, just like in your case. They initially quoted 350€ for diagnosis and repairs but ended up charging 420€ due to extra labor time accessing the wiring harness. Repair took about 3 hours total. All audio input functions now work normally, including the speech recognition for phone commands. I would check your wiring first before replacing the whole control module.

Thanks for the feedback about your repair experience. While my Touareg needed a full control module replacement, its interesting how similar symptoms led to different root causes. The wiring issue makes sense given how the harness runs through the headliner and is subject to regular stress. Your repair cost of 420€ was significantly more economical than my 815€ control unit replacement. This shows why proper diagnostics are crucial, the speech recognition and microphone issues can stem from multiple points in the system. For future reference to others facing similar Bluetooth issues, the key symptoms we both experienced were: Working audio playback, Failed voice recognition, Dead microphone input, Normal volume control operation The diagnostic approach should start with wiring checks before assuming module failure. I could have saved money if my shop had investigated the wiring more thoroughly before replacing the entire unit. One question: Did they mention any signs of water damage to the wiring? Since you mentioned the issues started during rainy weather, Im curious if moisture was a contributing factor.

I appreciate the detailed explanation about checking wiring first. The shop confirmed there was no moisture damage to the wiring harness. They found the issue was actually a pinched wire near where the headliner meets the A-pillar. The audio input was completely blocked due to this damaged section. The voice recognition and wireless connection problems disappeared as soon as they repaired that section of wiring. The ambient noise compensation system also started working properly again. Having gone through this microphone repair process, I definitely recommend having the wiring thoroughly checked before replacing any major components. For what it cost me in repairs (420€), the fix was relatively straightforward once they identified the exact location of the break. Makes me wonder how many control units get unnecessarily replaced when the issue is just damaged wiring. My experience shows that even with identical symptoms, the root cause can be quite different.

As someone with moderate car repair experience, I had an almost identical Bluetooth issue with my 2010 VW Touareg diesel last year. The sound quality for calls dropped completely while audio streaming remained functional. After troubleshooting basic connectivity steps, the workshop diagnosed a defective infotainment control module causing microphone input failure. They initially suspected just the microphone unit, but testing revealed the core system was the actual problem. The ambient noise detection feature had also stopped working completely. The repair involved: Full diagnostic scan, Replacement of the infotainment control unit, System reset and audio system recalibration, Testing of all connected functions Total cost was 815€ and took about 4 hours to complete. Since the fix, the audio system has worked flawlessly. To better assist with your specific case, could you share: Have you performed any system resets? Does the error message appear immediately on startup? Which infotainment system version is installed? Have you noticed any other electrical issues? This info would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced or points to a different problem.
