VW Touareg Stalling: Bad Coil Packs Strike Again

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Tiguan repair. That level of detail really helps. Did you remember roughly how much the total repair cost was? Also curious if you encountered any similar engine hesitation or check engine light issues since getting it fixed? My local shop quoted me 800€ just for the coil pack replacement, which seems steep, so trying to get a sense of what others paid for similar repairs.

Following the diagnostic check at the shop, the main culprit was indeed a defective ignition coil causing the misfire. The fix was actually much simpler and cheaper than initially expected. The mechanic found a faulty cable connection to the coil pack that was triggering the check engine light and causing the engine hesitation. The total repair came to just 95€ for fixing the connection issue. This was far less than the quoted coil pack replacement cost you mentioned. Since the repair, the engine has been running smoothly with no signs of misfires or hesitation during acceleration. The check engine light has stayed off and vehicle diagnostics show everything operating normally. Your 800€ quote does seem quite high if it only covers coil pack replacement. Would suggest getting a second opinion and having them specifically check the connections first, as sometimes the fix can be much simpler than a full component replacement.

Just wanted to update on how this turned out. After reading about your experience, I took it to a different shop for a second opinion. Smart move, turned out I had similar connection issues causing the engine stalling and misfire problems. The new mechanic did a thorough vehicle diagnostics check and found two loose coil pack connectors plus some corrosion. They cleaned the connections, secured everything properly, and only replaced one actually faulty coil pack. Total bill came to 230€, which included the diagnostic fee. Been driving for two weeks now, no more engine hesitation or check engine light. The car runs perfectly smooth during acceleration. Really glad I asked here before spending 800€ on unnecessary parts. Always worth getting that second opinion when dealing with electrical issues.

Had the same issue on a 2013 VW Tiguan. The symptoms perfectly match what you describe, rough running, stalling, and hesitation during acceleration. Initially suspected the coil packs, but vehicle diagnostics revealed a more complex problem. The root cause turned out to be a failing ignition coil combined with corroded plug connections. When one ignition coil starts failing, it often creates a cascade effect, leading to cylinder misfires across multiple cylinders. The corrosion on the electrical connectors made the problem worse by causing intermittent connection issues. The complete fix required: Replacing all ignition coils, Installing new spark plugs, Cleaning and resealing all coil pack connectors, Updating the engine control module This was a serious repair that took several hours at the shop. The stalling issue can be dangerous, especially at higher speeds. Would strongly recommend getting it checked soon, as continuing to drive with misfiring cylinders can damage your catalytic converter. Make sure the shop does proper diagnostic testing before replacing parts. Simply swapping coil packs without addressing connector issues often leads to recurring problems.
