VW Up Electric: Rough Shifting & Transfer Case Issues

Had my last service 2 months ago at 22866km and the mechanic didn't spot any issues then. Since your explanation matches my symptoms perfectly, especially the inconsistent shifting, I will take it to a certified workshop tomorrow. Thanks for the detailed cost breakdown, seems reasonable if it fixes the problem. Any specific tests you had them perform during diagnosis to confirm it was indeed transfer case gear wear and not something else?

Thanks for the additional info. Since fixing my e-Golf's transfer case, I learned quite a bit about proper diagnosis for these issues. The key tests my workshop performed were: Diagnostic steps that confirmed the gear wear: Electronic transmission system scan, Manual gear engagement test under controlled load, Specific check for gear grinding during shifts, Transfer case oil analysis showing metal particles, Visual inspection through the fill port The metal particles in the oil were the definitive proof of mechanical wear in my case. Make sure they specifically check the transfer case oil condition, as regular transmission issues can show similar symptoms but require different fixes. One tip: have them document the oil wear patterns they find. In my case, this helped confirm the exact wear points and ensured the correct parts were replaced. My total repair time was about 6 hours, which seems standard for this type of work. Since your mileage is lower than mine was (I had 35000km), you might be looking at less severe wear, potentially reducing your repair costs. Keep us updated on what they find during diagnosis.

Thanks everyone, I scheduled the appointment for tomorrow morning and will make sure they perform those specific tests, especially checking for metal particles in the transfer fluid. My mileage is indeed much lower, so hopefully the mechanical wear isnt as extensive as yours was. The 6-hour repair timeframe helps set expectations for how long I might need a replacement vehicle. I will definitely have them document the wear patterns and oil analysis results. Seems like catching this early, at 22866km, might save me from more expensive repairs down the line. Really appreciate the detailed guidance on the diagnostic process, gives me confidence in discussing the repair with the workshop. Will update the thread once I get the results from their inspection.

Having dealt with a similar issue on my 2019 VW e-Golf, I can share some relevant experience. As someone with moderate mechanical knowledge, I encountered comparable symptoms, rough shifting and slippage that turned out to be transfer case related. The workshop diagnosed severe mechanical wear in the transfer case gears, combined with significant oil leakage. The symptoms started much like yours, inconsistent shifting that gradually worsened over time. The repair involved: Complete inspection of the transfer case, Replacement of worn gears, Fresh transfer case oil, New seals to prevent future leakage Total cost came to 330€, including parts and labor. The repair resolved all shifting issues and the car has been running smoothly since. To better assist with your specific case, could you provide: Current mileage, When the symptoms first appeared, Whether you notice any unusual noises, If there are any visible oil leaks underneath, Service history regarding transmission maintenance Different VW electric models can have varying transfer case configurations, so these details would help determine if your issue matches what I experienced.
