VW Up Tailgate Stops Halfway, Hall Sensor Alert

Had the same tailgate motor issue on my VW Polo from 2019. The automatic tailgate would out of nowhere stop and trigger sensor fault warnings. The problem turned out to be a combination of damaged wiring and a misaligned tailgate sensor. The cables near the hinge area had worn down from repeated opening and closing, causing intermittent connection issues. The open tailgate warnings appeared because the sensor calibration was off due to the faulty wiring. The repair involved: Complete wiring harness replacement in the tailgate area, New tailgate motor installation, Sensor calibration after component replacement, Testing cycle of 50 open/close operations This was a significant repair requiring specialized diagnostic equipment. While not a safety-critical issue, leaving it unfixed can lead to complete tailgate failure and potential water ingress through improper sealing. The symptoms match your situation exactly, recommend having it checked soon before the wiring deteriorates further and causes additional component damage.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Just dealt with something really similar with my Up last year. Those tailgate sensor problems are really frustrating. The symptoms you described match what happened to mine perfectly, unusual stops and error messages. Was the repair as extensive for you as the previous response suggested? Would love to know what the final cost came out to for your fix, and if youve had any other tailgate motor issues since the repair. Mine has been working fine after getting it sorted, but always good to know what to watch out for.

Just got the car back from the shop last week. Unlike what I initially thought would be needed, the fix was much simpler and cheaper than my previous repair. The electrical sensor issue turned out to be just a damaged plug connection near the automatic tailgate mechanism. The mechanic located the fault in the sensor wiring without needing to replace the entire harness. The tailgate hall sensor was functioning correctly, it was just the connection that needed attention. Total cost came to 95€ for fixing the faulty cable connection. The automatic tailgate has been working flawlessly since the repair. No more unusual stops or sensor fault warnings. Much better outcome than my previous experience where multiple components needed replacement. Quick tip: regular inspection of the wiring around moving parts like the tailgate can help catch these issues before they develop into bigger problems. Since this fix, I make it a point to check for any visible wire wear when cleaning the car.

Thanks everyone for the detailed insights. After dealing with my tailgate issues, I finally went to get it checked out at a new mechanic. The experience was actually pretty positive. The hall sensor needed a simple reconnection and the automatic tailgate mechanism got a quick adjustment. Total repair time was about an hour and cost 120€. The mechanic showed me exactly where the wiring had come loose and explained how the sensor calibration process works. Really glad I asked here first, saved me from getting unnecessary parts replaced. The tailgate opens and closes perfectly now, no more error messages or half-open stops. No issues in the last few weeks since the fix. For anyone facing similar problems, definitely worth getting it checked early. These sensor fault issues seem common but are often simpler fixes than expected.
