Warning Signs: Metal in Oil & Engine Knock in Insignia

Thanks for your response! My Insignia has 263185 KM on the clock and had its last service about 6 weeks ago. Just checked the coolant level and it seems fine, no visible leaks either. I'm getting worried about those metal particles though, might book it in with my mechanic tomorrow just to be on the safe side. The knocking sound is what's really bothering me, especially since it gets worse when the engine's hot. Definitely don't want to risk any major damage.

Hey again! Yeah, after reading your update about the mileage and recent service, I'm pretty sure this isn't the same issue I had with my Vectra. Those metal shavings combined with the knocking sound... hate to say it, but it's giving me flashbacks to when my engine bearings started failing. I actually regret suggesting it might just be a coolant issue now. Back when my bearing problem started, I also had similar symptoms, that nasty knocking noise that got worse with heat, oil warning light, the works. Ended up costing me nearly €2000 to fix because I drove it for a week hoping it wasn't serious (big mistake!). Really glad you're planning to take it to the mechanic tomorrow. Those metal particles in the oil are definitely not normal, especially just 6 weeks after a service. Could be bearing wear, could be piston rings, but whatever it is, it needs looking at ASAP. Don't drive it more than absolutely necessary until then, trust me on this one! Would love to hear what your mechanic says. These Vauxhalls are generally solid cars, but at 263K km, some major components might need attention. Keep us posted!

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! Your experience with the bearing failure has definitely got me worried, I'll call my mechanic first thing in the morning and see if he can squeeze me in. Not gonna risk driving it much until then. You're right about it needing immediate attention, especially with those metal particles. Will definitely keep you posted about what the mechanic finds. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, might've saved me from making an expensive mistake by continuing to drive it! Thanks again for taking the time to help out.

Hey there! I have some experience with European cars and had a similar issue with my 2007 Vauxhall Vectra diesel (Insignia's predecessor). Actually, the symptoms you're describing ring a bell. In my case, it turned out the coolant level was too low, which was causing the engine to overheat and the oil to break down. Got it fixed at my local workshop, they did a coolant system check, topped it up, and checked for leaks. Cost me around €52.50. But before jumping to conclusions, how many miles/km on your engine? When was your last oil change? Is the coolant level normal? The metal particles in your oil are concerning though, might be something more serious than what I experienced. Better get it checked ASAP before it causes more damage.
