Weak battery and flickering lights in Opel Captiva built in 2007: exchange of experience wanted

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my Opel Captiva built in 2007 with a gasoline engine and 176564 km mileage. When starting, the battery is weak and the lights flicker or are dimmed. I myself think that my vehicle battery may be severely discharged due to self-discharge. I've had a bad experience with my garage in the past and it would be great if someone had similar problems and could tell me how it went for them. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

An Opel Captiva owner is experiencing a weak battery and flickering lights, suspecting the battery may be severely discharged. Another person shared a similar issue with their Opel Insignia, which was resolved by replacing a faulty control unit (ECU). The advice given is to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic to determine if the ECU is the cause, as it was in the shared experience. The owner plans to visit a garage to investigate the issue further.

Hello, I had a similar problem with my Opel Insignia from 2010. In my case, it was the defective control unit that caused these problems. I had it checked in my garage at the first sign. After a thorough investigation, it turned out that it was actually the control unit that was no longer working. It wasn't fun, let me tell you, but it was definitely a fixable issue. When it comes to cars, it's always better to play it safe and have it checked by an expert. You never know what could be causing it, but in my case it was definitely the ECU. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the tip! It's interesting to know that a faulty control unit can cause such symptoms. How much did the repair in the garage cost you, if you can remember? And have you had any other problems with your Opel since then?

Yes, after I went to the mechanic, the problem with the vehicle battery and the self-discharge was solved. I paid €600 to get the faulty control unit fixed. But since then my Opel hasn't had any more problems. So it was really worth the money. I just didn't want any more trouble with the car. Hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for the answers! That really helps me. It's good to hear that your Opel hasn't had any problems since the repair. 600€ is a lot, but if it solves the problem for good and I have peace of mind afterwards, it would be worth it to me. I will definitely visit my garage tomorrow and ask the mechanic to check the ECU. So thanks again for the helpful information!
