Windstar transmission oil temperature sensor issue

My 2001 Ford Windstar (gasoline engine) is showing signs of a faulty transmission oil temperature sensor at only 61443 km. The engine warning light comes on and the error memory confirms the issue. The gearbox occasionally goes into emergency mode, with slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises when shifting. Could this be a gearbox sensor problem?

I had similar problems with my Windstar. Have you checked the gearbox oil level? A low oil level can cause all sorts of weird issues with the transmission, including triggering the temperature sensor.

Thanks, I'll check the gearbox oil level immediately. If the gearbox oil level is not low, what else could it be?

If the oil level is fine, it's likely the sensor itself. Mine ended up needing a new sensor. Best to get it checked at a workshop, they can confirm it and replace it if needed. They quoted me 365€ for the work including the sensor.

Thank you so much! Your advice was invaluable. I took it to a trusted mechanic and it was indeed the transmission oil temperature sensor. The repair cost was precisely as you indicated. The shifting is now smooth and the warning lights are gone. I'm grateful for your insights!
