XC40 Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure Too Low

I've got a 2018 Volvo XC40 diesel with about 105k km. Lately, I've been getting a warning light, and the engine power seems reduced. There's noticeable smoke when I accelerate and a strong exhaust smell. Diagnostic tool shows "Diesel particulate filter exhaust pressure too low". Any ideas? I'm thinking it might be the exhaust back pressure sensor. Anyone else had a similar issue?

I had something similar with my XC40 diesel. Is it struggling to rev? That's the main symptom I had. Low pressure readings can indicate a faulty sensor. A pressure sensor, in its simplest form, is just a device that translates pressure into an electrical signal that the engine control unit (ECU) can understand.

Yeah, it is struggling to rev, definitely feels like something is holding it back. When you say similar, do you mean the low-pressure reading was also pointing to a faulty sensor for you? What was the fix?

Exactly that! The low pressure reading was spot on, and yep, turned out to be the exhaust back pressure sensor. I'd suggest getting it checked at a workshop – they can confirm it with proper diagnostics. It's worth getting it sorted quickly, since DPF issues can cause more expensive problems down the line.

Thanks for confirming, really appreciate it! Booked it into the workshop, and you were spot on. The exhaust back pressure sensor was indeed defective. Replaced it, cost me about 245€ all in. Running smooth again now!
