Thanks, I inspected the wiring quickly, but I'll check again more closely. When you say 'sensor in the fuel system,' was that specifically the fuel level sensor, or something else affecting the fuel mixture? Did you fix it yourself or go to a mechanic?

Yes, it was the fuel level sensor. You could replace it yourself, but accessing the fuel tank can be tricky and dangerous if you're not experienced. Given the symptoms and error code, I'd suggest a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and ensure a safe repair.

I brought the XC40 to my mechanic as suggested. The fuel level sensor was faulty. It was a straightforward fix; the new sensor and labor cost 52€. Thanks for the help!

I had a similar problem with my old BMW 3 Series. Same symptoms: check engine light, occasional stalling. It was a faulty sensor in the fuel system. Have you checked the wiring harness for corrosion or damage?
