XC60 Diesel Glow Control Issue

I'm having trouble with my 2020 Volvo XC60 diesel. It's got about 180k kilometers on it. I think the glow control unit is defective. The preheating lamp on the dashboard won't switch off, the check engine light is on, and I'm getting a lot of smoke when I accelerate, especially from a cold start. I've checked the obvious stuff like making sure all the connections are secure, but nothing seems to fix it. Any ideas?

I had a similar issue with my Volvo XC60 (don't remember the year exactly, but it's around the same vintage). Is it like an engine misfire, and does it happen after a cold start? For me, it was also the control unit. Have you checked the cable or plug connection to the control unit itself? That was my problem.

When you say 'control unit', are you talking about the glow plug control module? And where exactly is that located? I did wiggle some wires around, but didn't see any obvious damage. Was your check engine light also on?

Yep, the glow plug control module. And yes, the check engine light was on too. I didn't fix it myself. I took it to a workshop. Best to get it checked by someone who knows what they are doing, as a defective glow control unit can cause more problems.

Thanks for the info! I think I'll take your advice and bring it in. Turns out it was a defective cable or plug connection of the glow control unit. Repair cost me about 95€. Problem solved!
