XC60 Engine Stalling Reduced Power

Hi, I'm having an issue with my 2009 Volvo XC60 gasoline. The check engine light is on, and the engine stalls sometimes when idling. It also feels like I'm getting reduced engine power, especially when accelerating. I've got about 155897 km on the clock. I read somewhere that it could be the fuel volume regulator acting up, possibly because of a defective high pressure pump. Has anyone experienced similar problems? I’m hoping it's not something too serious or expensive, but I fear the worst!

Hey there, that does sound frustrating. The stalling at idle and reduced power definitely point towards a fuel issue. The check engine light should have thrown some codes; have you had the chance to read them? Knowing the specific error codes would really help narrow down the problem. It could be a faulty sensor messing with the fuel mixture, or perhaps a clogged fuel filter restricting fuel flow. I had similar symptoms once on my old car and it turned out to be a bad mass airflow sensor.

Thanks for the quick reply! I did manage to get the error codes read, and it pointed to a fuel volume regulator issue. I'm just not sure what the best course of action is from here. Is it something I could potentially tackle myself, or am I better off taking it to a professional? Also, if it is the high pressure pump, is that something that usually needs replacing, or could it be something simpler causing it to malfunction?

Okay, fuel volume regulator specifically... While theoretically you could replace it yourself, it's part of the fuel injection system, which operates at very high pressures. Unless you're very comfortable working with fuel systems and have the right tools and know the safety procedures, I'd strongly advise against it. Incorrectly installed, you could end up with a fuel leak, or worse. And with those error codes, it's very likely that the high-pressure pump needs replacement, not repair. I'd get a quote from a trusted workshop.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I think you're right, messing with the fuel system myself sounds like a recipe for disaster. I took it to my local shop, and they confirmed that the high-pressure pump was indeed defective and needed replacing. The total cost came out to be around 1510€ which is painful, but at least it's fixed now. I really appreciate the help!
