XC70 Heavy Steering Vibration

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2006 Volvo XC70 (gasoline engine) with only 38464 km. The steering has become noticeably heavier, almost like the power steering is failing intermittently, and there's a vibration in the wheel at certain speeds. I suspect it's the steering angle sensor. I've read that faulty coding can cause this. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Whoa, that sounds familiar! I've got an XC70, too. I had similar symptoms – the heavier steering feel and some shaking, especially after longer drives. Have you checked if it throws any codes? Might be related to the traction control system freaking out. Also, did you recently have any work done on your alignment or wheels? A bad alignment can mess with the sensor readings.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't pulled any codes yet, but that's next on my list. No recent alignment work, but that's a good point. I'm leaning towards the sensor itself. When you had the issue, did you have to replace the sensor, or was it something else?

Yeah, it turned out to be the steering angle sensor coding. The garage said it was sending funky signals and messing with the whole system. They initially suspected a sensor replacement but started by re-coding the sensor. That fixed it for a short period of time but the problem returned a week later. So in the end, they replaced it. If you are getting the same issues, go to the workshop. It will cost around 195€ including the wheel alignment.

Thanks so much for the info! Sounds like I'm on the right track. I'll get it checked out ASAP. I took it to the local shop, and indeed the steering angle sensor was defective, exactly as suspected. Sensor replacement did the trick and I'm back on the road now!
