XC70 rough idle cold start

Alright, Volvo gurus, I'm pulling my hair out! My 2006 Volvo XC70 with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. It's got 219175 km on the clock. The main issue is a really rough idle during cold starts. It's like the engine is struggling to get going, running super poorly until it warms up a bit. And sometimes, it just plain refuses to start on the first try! I'm thinking it might be a faulty cold start injector – like the little guy isn't spraying fuel correctly when the engine's cold. Any ideas?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my old Peugeot 207. Rough idle and hard starting, especially when it was cold outside. Sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me. Have you checked the fuel rail pressure? Or maybe tried cleaning the fuel injectors? If the fuel pressure is too low, or the injectors are clogged, it can cause those exact symptoms. Fuel rail is basically what feeds the fuel to the injectors, so if it's not got enough pressure, the engine doesn't get enough fuel. Just a thought!

Fuel rail pressure, huh? I haven't checked that specifically. Is that something I can easily check myself, or is it best left to a professional? I'm not exactly a master mechanic, but I'm willing to give it a shot if it's straightforward. And cleaning the injectors – is there a particular product or method you'd recommend? I'm just trying to get a better idea of what I'm dealing with here.

Honestly, checking the fuel rail pressure can be a bit tricky without the right tools. You need a gauge that can connect to the fuel rail. As for cleaning, you can try fuel injector cleaner that you pour into the gas tank, but if they're really clogged, it might not be enough. Maybe you should take it to a workshop.

Thanks for the help! I ended up taking it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on – it was indeed a faulty fuel injector. Apparently, the cold start injector was completely kaput. They replaced it, and the problem is solved. Cost me 515€, but at least the old girl is running smoothly again!
