XC90 fuel tank ventilation leak

I have a 2006 Volvo XC90 with a gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, and the engine stalls at idle sometimes. I suspect a fuel tank ventilation system leak. Could a defective activated charcoal filter be the issue?

I had similar symptoms on my old Audi A4. Turned out to be a faulty purge valve in the EVAP system. Have you checked the purge valve and the hoses connected to the charcoal canister for any cracks or leaks? A leak there can mess with the air flow and cause system failure.

Thanks for the tip. Where exactly is the purge valve located in relation to the charcoal canister? I'd like to inspect it before taking it in.

On my Audi, it was near the engine, connected to the intake manifold and the charcoal canister with vacuum lines. I recommend getting a diagram specific to the Volvo XC90 to locate it precisely. If you're not comfortable doing that, it's probably best to get it checked at a workshop. The symptoms really point to the EVAP system.

It was indeed the fuel tank ventilation system. The workshop confirmed a defective activated charcoal filter. Repair cost was 275€ Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
