XC90 hybrid MAF sensor issue

I only have access to a basic OBD2 scanner, which returned a code indicating a mass air flow sensor malfunction. Could this single code definitively implicate the MAF sensor, or is more sophisticated diagnostic testing advisable?

Okay, one MAF sensor code doesn't 100% confirm it, but it's highly suspect given all your symptoms. With those miles and the XC90 being a hybrid, the sensor failure is more likely. It would be best to have a workshop confirm this. They'll have the right tools to check the air-fuel ratio and other things.

Based on your recommendation and my initial findings, I scheduled an appointment with a qualified workshop for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment. The repair included replacing the mass air flow meter, costing 365€.

Smoke when accelerating and engine stalling sounds pretty bad. Are you sure it's just the MAF sensor? Those symptoms could point to other issues, like problems with the fuel injectors or even the catalytic converter. Have you scanned the car for any error codes beyond what triggered the check engine light?
