XC90 Immobilizer Issue

My 2023 Volvo XC90 hybrid is giving me headaches. It's got about 94k km on it. Lately, it's been acting like the immobilizer is kicking in. Sometimes it just cranks and won't start. Other times, it starts for a second and then dies. And of course, there's an error code stored. I'm thinking it might be something with the key programming? Anyone else had similar issues?

The symptoms you describe certainly suggest a potential issue with the immobilizer system. Given that the engine starts briefly before cutting out, and considering the error code present, incorrect key programming is a plausible hypothesis. Have you attempted using your spare key to start the vehicle? Furthermore, were there any recent instances of battery replacement or electronic system work performed on the vehicle, as these events can sometimes trigger immobilizer-related problems?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I did try the spare key, and it's doing the exact same thing. No recent battery changes or anything like that either. Could it be something with the ignition control module itself, or is it really most likely the key needing to be re-programmed? I'm just trying to get a better idea before I take it in.

Given that the spare key exhibits the same behavior, and no recent electrical work has been performed, the probability of a key programming issue or a fault within the immobilizer system itself is indeed elevated. While a faulty ignition control module could theoretically contribute to such symptoms, it is less common than key-related problems. I would strongly advise consulting a qualified Volvo technician. They possess the diagnostic equipment necessary to accurately pinpoint the fault, reprogram the key if required, and ensure the security system functions correctly. Avoid attempting any 'immobilizer bypass' procedures found online, as these can severely compromise your vehicle's security.

Appreciate the detailed advice. Sounds like a trip to the shop is unavoidable. Just wanted to be a little informed before I went in. It was indeed a key programming issue. Cost me 45€ to get it sorted.
