XC90 Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor Issue

I'm writing about a potential issue with my 2019 Volvo XC90 hybrid. At 35258 km, the engine warning light is on, with a message about the transmission. The gearbox occasionally enters emergency mode, and gear shifts are sometimes unclean, with slippage and grinding noises. An error related to the transmission oil temperature sensor is stored. Could this be a significant concern?

Hmm, that's not ideal. Sounds familiar though. I had something similar with my old BMW 3 series, although it was a petrol engine. Was the gearbox oil level checked? That was the culprit for me.

Thank you for your insight. I hadn't considered checking the gearbox oil level. Is it possible that a low oil level could cause the temperature sensor to trigger a fault? I find it odd that temperature is the primary error.

Yep, that's exactly what happened with my 3 series. Low oil, the 'box overheats, throws a code for the temp sensor, and then goes into limp mode to protect itself. Is it worth a shot? I'd suggest getting it checked out at a workshop ASAP. Better safe than sorry with these things.

Understood. Thank you for sharing your experience. The gearbox oil level was indeed low, causing the sensor to trigger. A top-up and sensor replacement cost 365€. Problem solved!
