XRV Camshaft Sensor Issue

Experiencing starting issues, frequent stalling, and a check engine light with my 2021 Honda XRV gasoline engine at 194436 km. Suspect a defective camshaft sensor. Similar experiences?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Honda XRV with 194,436 km is experiencing starting issues, frequent stalling, and a check engine light, suspected to be due to a defective camshaft sensor. The problem may be caused by a faulty encoder wheel on the camshafts, which can disrupt the sensor's signal. Testing the sensor with a multimeter is suggested, but diagnosing the encoder wheel issue requires specialized equipment. A local garage confirmed the encoder wheel was defective, and after repairs, including sensor replacement, the vehicle runs smoothly.

I've seen that problem on my XRV. Similar thing happened – rough starting, engine cutting out, and that dreaded check engine light. My guess is that it's probably the encoder wheel on the camshafts causing problems. Think of it like a tiny, slightly warped record that the sensor reads. It doesn't take much of a bend to mess up the signal.

If it's the encoder wheel causing the camshaft sensor to misbehave, is there a way to test this theory before replacing the sensor? Or perhaps even verify the sensor itself isn't faulty? Any guidance?

You could try to test the sensor directly with a multimeter, checking its resistance according to the service manual. But honestly, if the encoder wheel is the culprit (and the symptoms are pointing that way), it’s a fiddly job to diagnose without the right equipment. It's like trying to diagnose a clogged artery with just a stethoscope – you might hear something's wrong, but pinpointing the exact blockage requires more specialized tools. Best take it to a workshop.

My local garage confirmed the encoder wheel on the camshafts was defective, causing the sensor to give bad readings. The repairs, including replacing the sensor, cost 695€. Now, it runs smoothly.
