Xsara Overvoltage Issues

I'm having a perplexing issue with my 2006 Citroen Xsara diesel: the engine control unit is reporting an overvoltage condition after 112707 kilometers. This overvoltage causes many fault memory entries and failures across various systems. I've also observed a weak battery during engine start, suggesting a potential drain or charging problem. Could the battery be heavily discharged or defective, causing the alternator to overcompensate? Has anyone experienced a similar electrical malfunction?

Whoa, that sounds eerily familiar! I had almost the exact same thing happen with my Xsara. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. You mention a weak battery... that's where I'd start digging. What voltage readings are you getting across the battery terminals when the engine is running? It sounds like the voltage regulator in your alternator might be shot, causing it to pump out way too much juice. But definitely check that battery first. It's like trying to fill a leaky bucket; the alternator keeps trying to compensate!

Thank you for your insightful response. I agree that the battery is a prime suspect. Did you also observe widespread system failures alongside the overvoltage? Were the fault codes indicative of a systemic issue, or were they isolated to specific modules? I am trying to ascertain whether the root cause is indeed the battery or a more insidious problem within the charging circuit itself.

Yep, the whole car went haywire! Fault lights popping up everywhere, the radio cutting out, even the windows started acting up. It was like a domino effect. I spent ages chasing individual errors, but they all pointed back to the overvoltage. Honestly, after messing with it for a week, I bit the bullet and took it to a shop. They confirmed it was the voltage regulator in the alternator frying everything. Best to get it checked professionally before you end up like me, chasing ghosts in the machine!

I appreciate you sharing your experience. Your description of the domino effect resonates strongly with the symptoms I am observing. Based on your recommendation, I shall defer to a qualified technician for a thorough diagnosis and repair. The workshop has confirmed a defective battery and a faulty voltage regulator. Total repair cost is estimated at 290€ Thank you again for your invaluable assistance.
