Xterra engine stall check engine light
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Nissan Xterra with a gasoline engine is experiencing stalling issues and a check engine light, particularly when idling. The problem is suspected to be related to the fuel tank ventilation system, possibly due to a faulty activated charcoal filter. An error code indicating an air flow issue in the evaporative emission control system supports this suspicion. The solution involves replacing the charcoal filter, which resolves the issue.

I got an error code about an air flow issue in the evaporative emission control system. I don't smell any unusual odors. Would I need more advanced diagnostics to find the exact problem?

With an air flow error and no fuel smells, the activated charcoal filter is likely the problem. More diagnostics are possible, but given the vehicle's age, replacing the filter might be smart. I'd suggest a mechanic confirm the diagnosis. Think going to a workshop is best?

You were right on the money. I took it to my mechanic, and the charcoal filter was the problem. It's fixed now for 275€. Thanks for the help!

Those symptoms could be a fuel tank ventilation issue. Has the check engine light given any specific error codes? Any fuel odors or hissing near the fuel tank after driving? That could help find the leak.
