XTrail Automatic Transmission Parking Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Nissan XTrail is experiencing issues with its automatic transmission, specifically in the parking position, which prevents the engine from starting and triggers the check engine light. Diagnostics indicate a defective control unit, but there is also a possibility of issues with the gear linkage or neutral position sensor. The suggested solution is to have the vehicle inspected by a qualified workshop, as the problem may require professional repair, likely involving the control unit.

Yes, 'struggles to find the right gear' is an apt description. The shifts are often delayed and accompanied by a jolt. You mention checking the gear shifter. Could you elaborate on what aspects of the gear shifter should be examined? Is there a specific sensor or mechanical linkage that is prone to failure and might mimic the symptoms of a defective control unit?

Yes, those jolts sound familiar. I'm not an expert, but based on my experience, I would still suggest you go directly to a workshop. In my case it turned out to be the control unit like you said. It's not something easily fixed by yourself.

Thank you for your insights. It seems a visit to a qualified workshop is unavoidable. I shall proceed accordingly, bearing in mind the likely diagnosis of a defective control unit. Your confirmation has been instrumental in preparing me for the inevitable expenditure. Thank you again for your time and expertise.

I have a similar issue with my XTrail. By 'unclean shifts', do you mean it sometimes struggles to find the right gear? The automatic transmission can be very sensitive; these issues often relate to transmission failure. It might be worth checking the gear shifter itself before assuming the worst about the control unit.
