XTrail Hybrid Exhaust Treatment Malfunction
Summary of the thread
A 2022 Nissan XTrail Hybrid with 210,720 km exhibited a check engine light, rough engine performance, an exhaust leak, and a strong exhaust smell, suggesting an exhaust treatment malfunction. The issue was suspected to be related to the catalytic converter or NOx sensor, but a defective lambda sensor was identified as the cause. Replacing the lambda sensor resolved the malfunction.

Fuel consumption seems normal, but I haven't measured precisely. I cannot pinpoint the exhaust leak location. Regarding the catalytic converter and NOx sensor, is there a way to test them without specialized equipment?

Testing those components usually requires diagnostic tools. Honestly, based on your symptoms and mileage, a defective lambda sensor is the most probable cause. I'd advise getting it checked at a trusted workshop!

Thank you so much for your advice. I took it to a workshop, and, you were spot on: the lambda sensor was defective. The repair cost me 375€. The exhaust treatment malfunction is now resolved!

Sounds familiar! I had a similar ordeal with my 2018 BMW 530e. Check Engine light, rough running, the works. How's your fuel consumption? Any idea where the exhaust leak is coming from? Could be related to the catalytic converter or even a faulty NOx sensor.
