Yaris Hybrid Coolant Loss

Hi, I've got a 2022 Toyota Yaris hybrid with about 145k kilometers on it. Recently, the check engine light came on, and I scanned it and found an error related to low coolant level. I checked the coolant reservoir, and it's way below the minimum line. I filled it up, but the light came back on after a few days. Any ideas?

Greetings. A recurring low coolant level in your 2022 Toyota Yaris hybrid warrants a thorough investigation. While topping off the coolant provides a temporary solution, it is imperative to determine the underlying cause of the loss. I recommend a systematic approach, starting with a visual inspection of the entire cooling system. Carefully examine all hoses, connections, and the radiator itself for any signs of leakage, such as coolant stains or dampness. Furthermore, inspect the coolant reservoir and its cap for any cracks or damage that could lead to evaporation or leakage. Have you observed any white smoke emanating from the exhaust, or any unusual smells inside the cabin? These could be indicative of a more serious issue, such as a head gasket leak.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I didn't notice any white smoke or strange smells. I'll double-check all the hoses and the radiator cap like you suggested. Where exactly should I be looking for coolant stains? Are there any specific spots on the engine that are more prone to leaking?

Coolant stains typically manifest as a dried, crusty residue, often white, green, or orange in color, depending on the type of coolant used. Pay close attention to the areas around hose connections, the water pump (usually located at the front of the engine, driven by a belt), and the thermostat housing. Given that you refilled the coolant and the light reappeared, there could be a small leak that is difficult to detect without a pressure test. I strongly advise consulting a qualified mechanic for a comprehensive diagnosis. Continuing to operate the vehicle with a persistent coolant leak could lead to engine overheating and potentially severe damage.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to a local mechanic, and they found a small leak in the radiator. They repaired it, pressure tested the system, and refilled the coolant. The total cost was 52€ Hopefully, that's the end of it!
