BMW 2 Series Error: Seeking Reliable Diagnostic Help

Hi everyone! Need some advice about my 2017 BMW 2 Series (163K km, gas engine). Getting an error message on the speedometer display and there's a stored error in the system. Seems to be related to an incomplete system check. Had some sketchy experiences with mechanics before, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar issues on their BMW? What was the actual problem and did you find a trustworthy mechanic to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I have a 2014 BMW 3 Series and dealt with a similar system error message last month. Initially thought it was just a glitch, but my OBD2 reading showed it was tied to the DME (Digital Motor Electronics) module. Took it to a certified mechanic who specializes in German cars. Turned out the issue was related to a faulty crankshaft position sensor, pretty serious as it can cause the engine to stall or not start at all if left unchecked. The repair involved replacing the sensor and recalibrating the system. Your mileage is similar to what mine was when this happened. These sensors typically start failing around the 150K km mark on these engines. Would recommend getting it checked soon by someone who really knows BMWs, worth finding a specialist rather than a general mechanic for this kind of issue. The fix wasn't overly complex but definitely needed proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. Been running smooth since the repair.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That crankshaft position sensor issue sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. My symptoms are really similar to what you described. I got it sorted last week and it's been running great since. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything with mine.

Hey again! Great to hear you got it sorted! Actually, my issue turned out better than expected. After seeing the mechanic, that System readiness message completely disappeared and the OBD2 readings are all clear now. The crazy part? Didn't cost me anything! The specialist found it was just a temporary glitch in the DME module that needed a proper reset, nothing physically wrong with the sensor after all. Since the fix, my 3 Series has been running like a dream. No weird messages, no stalling, nothing. It's been about six weeks now and everything's still perfect. Going to a BMW specialist really made the difference, they knew exactly what they were looking at and didn't just start replacing parts unnecessarily. Just keep an eye on your dash for any new messages, but sounds like you're good to go. These BMWs can be quirky with their electronics sometimes, but when they're running right, they're fantastic cars. Let me know if anything else pops up!

Thanks for the update! Wish I had known about your experience before I went to get mine fixed. The mechanic I ended up going to charged me quite a bit, around €600 for replacing the sensor and doing the system reset. Still, at least the car's running perfectly now. My experience was a bit different from yours. Had to leave the car at the shop for two days while they diagnosed and fixed everything. The mechanic showed me the old sensor, it was actually worn out and needed replacing. Maybe that's why mine needed the full repair while yours just needed a reset. Anyway, it's been a week since the fix, and everything's working great. No more error messages, and the engine feels smoother than before. Definitely learned my lesson about finding a specialist mechanic, the extra cost was worth it for the peace of mind. Thanks again for all your help with this!
