BMW 2 Series Jerking: Transfer Case Issues & Help Needed

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2016 BMW 2 Series (18,709 km, gas engine). The car's been acting up lately, jerking during regular driving and the gearbox isn't shifting smoothly. Getting error messages on the dash and the all-wheel drive seems off. Think it might be transfer case oil related. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and any trusted mechanics you'd recommend. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had nearly identical issues with my 2013 BMW 4 Series. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, jerky transitions, rough shifting, and AWD system warnings. My transfer case had defective gears that needed replacement. Got it fixed at a garage last month. It was quite a serious job, they had to remove the entire transfer case assembly and rebuild it with new gears and bearings. Took them about three days to complete the work. The mechanic showed me the worn-out gears, and they were pretty badly damaged. Not something you want to leave unattended, as it can lead to complete transmission failure. Since the repair, my car's been shifting like new again, no more jerking or warning lights. Hope this helps with your decision-making. Get it checked soon.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's super helpful as it sounds exactly like my problem. Been driving me crazy with all these issues. Would you mind letting me know how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other problems pop up since they fixed it? Just want to know what I might be in for.

Hey again! Glad to help clear things up! Since getting my 4 Series fixed last month, it's been running perfectly smooth, no more jerking or warning lights whatsoever. The transfer case oil wear fault is completely gone, and honestly, the car drives better than it has in ages. Total cost came to 330 € for the repair, which included replacing those defective gears in the transfer case. Considering how complex the job was, I'd say it was worth every penny. Haven't had a single issue since then, the transmission shifts like butter now, and the AWD system is working exactly as it should. Trust me, getting it sorted sooner rather than later is the way to go. Mine's been rock solid since the repair, and I'm kicking myself for not doing it earlier. Really happy I got it fixed when I did before it turned into something more serious. Let me know if you need any other details about the repair. Always happy to help a fellow BMW owner!

Thanks so much for all the details! I took your advice and finally got my car checked out today. You were spot on, it was definitely the transfer case causing all the trouble. The mechanic I found was really thorough and showed me exactly what was wrong. Had to pay a bit more than you did, around 400 €, but they also replaced some worn-out bearings they found during inspection. The whole job took about four days, but honestly, it was worth the wait. Just picked it up this afternoon and the difference is incredible! No more jerking, smooth gear shifts, and those annoying warning lights are finally gone. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me feel more confident about getting it fixed instead of putting it off. Car's running like new now. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
