BMW 3 Lighting and Rain Sensor Issues
Summary of the thread
The owner of a 2005 BMW 3 is experiencing issues with the lighting and rain sensor, particularly when the Lighting Control Module (LCM) is set to 'Automatic', causing a green light to blink and the rain sensor to fail intermittently. After a windshield replacement, these issues persisted, suggesting a possible connection. Solutions include checking the rain sensor's alignment and connection, resetting the LCM by disconnecting the battery, and inspecting the LCM and wiring for faults. Ultimately, replacing the LCM resolved the initial issues, but introduced a tail light warning, likely due to a coding mismatch, which may require professional re-coding.

Start by checking if the rain sensor is properly connected and aligned on the windshield. Sometimes, after a windshield replacement, the sensor might not be correctly positioned or securely attached, affecting its functionality. Ensure there are no obstructions or dirt on the sensor area. If the issue persists, it might be worth having a professional inspect the sensor and the Lighting Control Module for any faults. Let me know how it goes or if you have further questions!
I will check the Rain Sensor, but what is strange is that the Rain sensor was already not working properly as mentioned before and after a few months the green blinking light started, also the Daytime Running Lights also stopped working since the green light blinking started...

The blinking green light and the issues with the Daytime Running Lights could indicate a problem with the Lighting Control Module (LCM). Try resetting the LCM by disconnecting the car battery for about 15 minutes, then reconnecting it. This can sometimes resolve electronic glitches. If the problem persists, it might be necessary to have the LCM checked for faults or reprogrammed by a professional. Please update me on your progress or if you have more questions!

I did the battery disconnect and it still is blinking green, my next move would be to reprogram the LCM, but I did not see where I can do this via Carly, does anyone know if it is possible to use Carly for this purpose and if so, how? thanks again for this great community

I also notice now after disconnecting the battery, the Headlight (not the daytime running light) is on constantly, so even if I put the control knob to 0 or any other setting, it still is on???

This constant headlight issue might be due to a malfunctioning Lighting Control Module (LCM) or a wiring issue. Before considering reprogramming, check the fuses related to the LCM and headlights to ensure none are blown. If the fuses are intact, it might be best to have a professional diagnose the LCM, as it could require specialized equipment for reprogramming or replacement. Let me know if you need further assistance!

sorry for all this new revelations, also observed that when the car is not running, all the switch settings on LCM, including 'Automatic' work fine, but as soon as I start the car, the normal headlights are ON, regardless of switch settings.

This behavior suggests a potential issue with the LCM or its wiring, possibly a fault that only manifests when the vehicle is running. Check for any loose or damaged wiring connections to the LCM, as vibrations from the engine could be affecting the connection. If everything appears intact, it might be necessary to have a professional inspect the LCM for internal faults. Please keep me updated on your findings or if you have more questions!

I pulled the LCM out, wiring and fuses all looked good... wondering before I take it to a professional, is there another way to reset the LCM other than disconnecting the battery? is that a sure way of resetting (since I tried that multiple times)... Can it be done via Carly? I don't see the option for it. Thanks again for all your support

Unfortunately, resetting the LCM typically requires specialized diagnostic tools beyond basic consumer-level devices like Carly. Since you've already tried the battery disconnect method without success, it's likely that the issue is more complex. I recommend having a professional with the appropriate diagnostic equipment inspect and potentially reprogram or replace the LCM. This is important to ensure your vehicle's lighting system functions correctly and safely. Let me know if you have any further questions!
